I have built a mini pc for my TV just for watching movies emulators and such and was wondering if it possible to restrict access to everything else. Have other people using it and they are constantly copying huge folders to it just because they are to lazy to plug in their usb hdd when they want to watch something. To me its pretty impractical constantly writing deleting and rewriting something they already have onto another drive just so they dont have to plug a cord in when they want to watch something.

To simplify i want to disable writing anything from a usb drive without a password and also restrict everything else accept using current programs on there. I did make the drive write protected but that also prevents anyone from saving games and such on the emulators so this solution wont work. Ive tried making a limited user account but that doesnt seem to work either or im doing something very wrong. Any ideas on this would be great.

Also forgot to mention im running windows XP pro rather than windows 7/8 due to the minimal running requirements.

Yes - make another account for them to log on to. Make sure you're the only Administrator.

Right click on folders you don't want them to access and make sure the folder is not write accessible. Or if you don't want them to even see what's in it - deny read access too

Thanks for the quick response. I've had a quick look through them before and most seem to be the reverse of what im after. I don't mind people copying from my HDD its just don't want people writing to it. Will have another look through see if theres anything else i missed. Its just a pain when whatever i search is typically the reverse of what i want.

Thanks for the idea but i've tried this before but found emulators save game wont work. I did allow just the specific folder for saves but my idiot room mates just install files to that folder. You have no idea how aggravating it is :). Thats pretty much why i wanted to just disable usb writing without a password. Most things i find though disable writing to a usb though rather than other way around.
