No Display When Resuming PC After The Display Has Been Timely Turned Off

I have this really weird problem. Before I get to real problem, I should mention this. I connect to internet using an USB modem. There were some physical damage to the modem as a result the USB port was damaged and a wire torn. I went to a shop, he welded the wire. Now I use a 1.5 meter USB extension cable where the USB port of the modem is poorly connected. But no problem; it works fine. No connection or speed problem. Now to the problem. My pc is never meant to sleep. I just selected 3 minutes to turn off the display only. Sometimes, when the display is timely turned off, I resume PC using mouse or Keyboard. The blinking monitor light become static but no display. I wait three minute and the monitor again goes into power saving mode. I resume and same things happens. The light is on but no display. I restart and it gets the display. But now the weird things happen. Pc says it cant recognize the USB modem; it might have malfunctioned. I just pull out the USB cable and connect again. It works. Any help ?

If I'm not mistaken, my pc is NEVER meant to sleep. In the section TURN OFF THE DISPLAY AFTER; there I chose 3 minutes. And it doesn't occur always and my modem is plugged in a USB 2.0 port. Thanks for the reply though.
