I would like recommendations on what specific 22nm one i should choose under $300
I notice some of them do not have a L2 cache. will this matter for games or is a L3 cache enough?
Can you overclock any model?

Solution
Yes the Xeon e3 12XXv3 lineup are all derivatives of the i7 4770, and will perform as such. They vary only in clock speed and the presence of an igpu or not.

Xeon is not overclockable, and the e3-1230v3 is probably the best bang for the buck cpu. Has hyperthreading and 4 cores, at the price of an i5. You do not need to pair it with a z87/97 if you dont want to overclock and dont need multi-gpu setup, so you can pick a cheap Hxx or Bxx chipset.

I believe the 1220 is only 4core 4 threads :) So not all are the same as 4770 :)

going with the 1230 v3 and a cheap h81 motherboard would be very potent. If I didn't want to skip the hassle of dealing with changing mobos due to me having an OEM win7, I'd prob get an h97 and Xeon 1230 v3 now and see how the devil canyon pans out, the h97/z97 I've read is also guaranteed to have Broadwell support in 2015 too.

Even the h81 still has USB 3.0 and Sata 6. As time goes on I'm kinda caring less and less about the extreme e peen about flashy overclocking, etc. Give me a reliable cheapish motherboard and a stout cpu like the Xeon I don't have to overclock anyway (and dem 8 threads :p ) and I'm happy....I'm really not interested in crossfire/sli, I'd rather have 1 strong card than combining 2 others, I also really don't have any intention of ever going above 1080p for many years to come.

In short, the Xeon 1230 v3 would serve you for MANY years to come. There's still people gaming fine on the old first gen i7 920s and those are clocked kinda low at 2.66ghz, and haswell is a good improvement clock for clock over them on top of being clocked higher.

Try to get a motherboard with multi core enhancement

I agree, overclocking started out fun and gave me alot of knowledge but i guess we all become more refined overtime. AMD got me hooked with high clock rates but the fact is they need it because of 32nm vs 28nm scaling and not coming out with the 28nm FX is a major fail in my opinion.

Not sure about the motherboard yet, what do you guys think of this one? does it have mult-core enhancement?
