Hope someone can help,

I've just finished a new build PC. Like to think I know what I'm doing but haven't built a pc for a few years. My question concerns the compatibility of a stock BIOS h87 mobo and a haswell refresh CPU.

specs are:

Pentium G3240 3.1GHz
Asus H87M-E Micro ATX LGA1150
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 (Only 1 stick due to budget but will get a second 4gb stick pretty soon)
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM hd
Silverstone PS08BMicroATX Mid Tower Case
Silverstone Strider Essential 500W 80+ PSU
LG Optical drive
No video card
Wireless Pcie card
Firewire Pcie card

PC powers up fine, all fans spin + power LED but doesn't appear to boot (no display output at all). I've double checked connections, tried RAM in different slots, unplugged all drives and cards, etc and no joy. I don't currently have a chassis/internal speaker so have been unable to troubleshoot that thoroughly with beeps yet, however my main question concerns the H87 chipset and the Haswell refresh CPU that I have installed.

Asus 'suggests' (their words) a BIOS update for use with refresh cpus, but whether that update is actually a requirement in order to boot is unclear to me. I have read varying opinions from what little I can find on the subject online.

I don't have an older 1150 chip so if this is the case I guess I'll need to look at either returning the motherboard and getting an H97, or buying the cheapest pre-refresh 1150 CPU for the sole purpose of booting up and updating the BIOS! (which may still not even turn out to be the problem).

Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies.

Already looked into if this was possible, but pretty sure there's no way of doing it with the h87m-e.

Sucks. My fault for not making sure it was compatible I suppose. Good to have some confirmation that this is the problem though.

Is there actually a chance that the cpu could've done any damage to the board, or the board to the cpu?

I think i will encounter the same issue. I recently ordered that same motherboard Asus H87M-E and an Intel G3258. According to the CPU Support list I need to have the BIOS 2001 and the Stock one is 0904. So there is no way to get into the Bios without updating it with another CPU?

I have got an idea, try to borrow or buy a graphics card(video card) plug your monitor to it instead of the one from the motherboard and turn it on spamming the Del button to access the Bios. If im not mistaken it should take you to the UEFI Bios and you should be able to flash the new bios from Asus EZ Flash 2. Keep in mind that you need an usb flash drive, formatted with FAT32 and the Bios CAP file in it. Good luck, I'm trying that as soon as I get my shipment.

Well I could not try that since the package was lost on the way. I received a full refund and ordered a z97 instead to prevent this from happening to me. In any case I was going to buy a G1820 which is around 40 USD on ebay, update my bios and resell it. I wish you good luck.
