would i need to upgrade my motherboard from a z87 to a z97 if i wanted the lasted cpu ?, or could i just buy the 5th gen cpu and put it on the z87?

What motherboard do you currently have? In most cases, you should be able to keep your motherboard on z87, just with a BIOS update.
