I have a workstation with 4 x 74GB 10K WD disk drives in RAID 10 that I want to upgrade to 2 x 256GB SSD in RAID 1. What is the best way to do this? Do I have to backup the data and then essentially do a "new build" where I install the new drives, configure the RAID array, re-install the OS, re-install the programs, and restore the data from backups ... or is there an easier way to migrate? Could I reconfigure the existing RAID array from RAID 10 to RAID 0, remove the 2 existing drives and replace them with the 2 new SSD, configure a second RAID array with RAID 1, and then copy the data from the RAID 0 array to the RAID 1 array? When I read the motherboard manual I did not find a way to reconfigure a RAID array; it basically states that "resetting" a RAID volume will erase all data. The motherboard is a Supermicro PDSGE. The new SSD are OCZ Vertex 460 which are supposed to come with adapters and some version of Acronis True Image. I have never used imaging software before. I do have a 2TB USB drive that I can use for backup / imaging. I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 64-bit so my current install is fairly recent otherwise a fresh install would make the most sense.
