Hello guys. I’m trying to find the most cost effective solution to a problem I have. Let me explain it. Today I have a HTPC capable of 3D and 1080p that is being use with XBMC. At this point I’m not interested on any type of gaming, maybe a little bit of nostalgia emulation.
In case anyone is interested it is comprised of:
1 Intel Core i3-2100 with stock fan http://amzn.com/B004JEVGMO
1 Ultra Durable 4 Classic GA-B75N Desktop Motherboard http://amzn.com/B00B9WIM0I
1 ASUS EAH6570 Radeon HD 6570 Video Card http://amzn.com/B004X8EOB6
1 SY1225SL12L Slip Stream 120mm Case Fan
1 Rosewill Case and 1x 80mm Fan http://amzn.com/B004Q7FUG2
The HTPC connects through USB 3.0 to two Mediasonic H8R2-SU3S2 http://amzn.com/B005GYDMYQ RAID towers. On each tower I have 2 JBOD configurations: 4 x 3TB (12TB) and 4x 2TB (8TB) for a total of 20TB per tower. One tower is a backups of the other, kind of a manual RAID 1.
Now I’m about to fill both towers, and I want to create a new 40 TB tower (10 x 4 TB) that I would backup on the old two towers.
I’m evaluating two options: OPTION 1: create a low cost/low power server that can host the 10 hard drives and use some sort of software raid, and OPTION 2: create a “server/htpc” combo that would serve both purposes.
But since I would like to keep two separate threads, lets focus here on MONSTER HTPC OPTION:
For this option, I’m debating between some components, and I would love that somebody with more experience than me reviews it and gives me his/her opinion. Here it goes:
MOTHERBOARD:
ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional http:///1o0w17n $157 @ http:///1rEwEYd
OR
ASRock Z97 Extreme6 http:///1hSSlu7 $170 @ http:///1jNs0NF
CASE:
Rosewill Gaming Computer Case THOR V2 http://amzn.com/B0058P5S9A
OR
Nzxt Technologies Phantom Phan-002Gr http://amzn.com/B004WO17UC
CPU:
Intel Pentium Processor G3420 3.2 GHz LGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00EUVHMR4 (I would need to use my Radeon HD 6570)
OR
Intel Pentium Processor G3220 3.0 GHz LGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00EUVG3P6 (I would need to use my Radeon HD 6570)
OR
Intel Core i3-4130 3.4 3 FCLGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00EUUKVXM
OR
Intel Core i3-4150 LGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00J2LIF2S
PSU:
I have no real idea. I want a PSU that would support whatever is installed (1xSSD, 10xHDD, CPU, GPU (if needed), Mother), and ideally cost 60 no more than 80.
The power consumption should be about 160 watts at is peak, if my calculation is correct:
Mother + CPU 112 watts (loaded).
10x WD Red 4TB @ 4.5w @ 45w (x10)
120GB SSD (kingston) @ 2.1w
TOTAL: 160 watts.
If I double that, it is 320 watts, so a 500+ watts unit should be more than enough.
So, which is the best option on those for MOTHER, CASE, CPU and PSU? Is there anything better I can buy considering that my budget is about 450?
NOTE: In case is not clear, the HTPC should play 1080p content and 3D content.
THANKS A LOT.
PS: if interested, the other thread is here: XXXXX.
ORIGINAL FIRST POST
Hi everybody.
I want to build a HTPC that would run XBMC on Windows 7, be 3D capable, boot from a 1 x 120GB SSD and have space for 10 x 4TB Western Digital green/red hard drives. It would not be used for gaming, may be a little bit of emulation.
I already have an i3 with LGA 1155 socket, 4GB of RAM, and a Radeon HD 6570 and it would be great if I can use them, but it is not mandatory.
So, what I need recommendations for are:
1) MOTHERBOARD: ideally an LGA 1155 motherboard with 11 SATA capabilities (1 SSD + 10 HDD). Minimum, it should have 10 SATA connectivity (in that case, I would have to do with 1 SSD and 9 HDD). It has to be HDMI or 3D capable or have an PCI slot for my Radeon HD 6570. USB 3.0.
2) CASE: ideally 11 or more 3.5 bays (it can be some 3.5 and some 5.25). Minimum 10 as I can leave the SSD somewhere.
3) PSU: it should be able to easily hold the 10 hdd, the SSD, the motherboard and if needed the Radeon.
I want to build a quality system, but I don’t want to overdo it without reason. For example, if a 600w PSU is good enough, I might go with a 700w PSU if there is no much of a difference or some justification.
So, what would you recommend me to buy? Please know that whatever components I buy, I would import them from USA (don't worry about that). What I mean is that I don't have the luxury of purchasing from amazon/newegg and returning if not good.
THANKS A LOT.
PS: by the way, so far I like this cases, but I don't know if they meet all of my requirements:

I don't think you are going to find anything that is not a server board with 11 SATA ports on it.
Do you plan on RAIDing any of the 10 drives, or if you loose a drive, you loose a drive, that's that. How are you going to configure them? JBOD? Separate volumes.
Really with some more RAM and a PCI-express SATA card, you can use your other stuff. 3D, that is more whether the 3D TV you have works with your video card, or what video cards your TV works with. Some TV's are fine with either AMD or NVidia, some one or the other, some neither and work best with 3D bluray players. 3D is one of those sketchy areas that the TV/Monitor drives what you need to make it work.

Well, my microATX motherboard has 4 SATA connections, not ports, I mean, I need to connect 10 HDDs and 1 SSD, so it is not actuall ports but connections/devices.
For RAID I was planning to use Windows 7 software RAID. The idea is to have 5 disks for movies (RAID 0 or JBOD) and 5 disks for the series (RAID 0 or JBOD again). If needed, I might add a RAID board to the bundle or a SATA board.
About 3D, I have an epson PowerLine 2000 projector, so it should work with that.
I don't understand your comment about more RAM.

Interesting problem.
1. Most any lga1155 motherboard will do so long as you can install one or more internal sata adapter cards.
Here is a 8 port unit that can attach 8 sata drives.
It will need a pcie x2 slot
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
It might pay you to research if the motherboard supports staggered sata drive startup.
That prevents an overload when all 10 drives start at once.
2. A case that can support 10 or more hard drives will not be cheap.
I don't think any of the ones you listed will do.
Here is one that will:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
3. Your i3 will have adequate integrated graphics. If you want more, your 6570 can fit in a x16 slot which will be present on any motherboard.
4. Usually, it is the graphics card that determines your psu need. In this case, 10 hard drives may need perhaps more than the 300w that you would otherwise need.
Buy only a quality psu. 500w should do it. But... the need for 12 sata adapters might suggest a stronger unit.
I think I would look at a 600w unit, and be prepared to buy a couple of molex to sata adapters.

If I undestand correctly, any of those three support 4xSATA 3GB/s and 4xSATA 6GB/s, for a total of 8. I'm correct? Any other recommendation?

Since the motherboards support 8 SATA hard drives, I would only need 3 more, maybe 4. Also, I read that Syba is pretty bad. So I choose this three:
Rosewill RC-230 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
HighPoint Rocket 640L http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Out of curiosity, can I ask you why you don't think the ones I list would do?
Also, I think the best option for me is the Rosewill Gaming ATX Full Tower Computer Case THOR V2 Black http://amzn.com/B0058P5S9A
Do you see any problems with it?

Coolermaster psu calculator said about 500w (http://www.coolermaster.outervision.com/) but ASUS calculator said about 900w! (http://support.asus.com/powersupply.aspx). Is there any calculator that would do?
For the PSUs, the only ones I found that have at least 11 SATA power connectors are:
LEPA MaxBron B800-MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
XFX Core Edition PRO850W (P1-850S-NLB9) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

NZXT HALE90 V2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
So, are these any good? any others better/cheaper I can get? These are are fairly expensive, 110~130 dollars, and I was hopping I can get something cheaper with good enough quality that would serve my purpose.
THANKS!

Of the motherboards, I think the Asus P8Z77 pro might be good. It has plenty of internal slots.
To see if a motherboard has a staggered hard drive start up option, download and read the motherboard manual and look for such an option in the bios settings. I think a typical hard drive can draw 10w. Startup is perhaps twice that.
For that reason, overprovision the psu a bit. A psu will only use the wattage demanded of it, regardless of it's max ability. Also do not skimp on quality.
Here is a quality list:
http://community.newegg.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/...
I might pick this Seasonic 620w unit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
It has 8 sata connectors, and 6 molex connectors among other things.
It will be able to deliver power to all connectors it has at the same time.
Use some molex to sata adapters like this to get some extra connectors:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
I think I would favor the sata adapters with pcie connectors over the older pci.
The case should do the job. You will need some adapters to fit some hard drives into the front 5.12" spaces.

Thanks again for taking your time to reply.
I would check all motherboards for that option then.
According to this http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/287... the average power requirement is 4.5 W, not 10W, so maybe 10w at startup?
Since the hard drives are half your original assumption, do you still think 620w is good enough? I don't want to be short on power for sure.
You totally lost me on that. What do you mean?
By the way, would you buy a manufacturer refurbished or used motherboard?

I think I would build a small HTPC case, and then build a 8-10 bay NAS case separately. It sounds more reasonable than trying to fit all of that inside one case. I already have the small HTPC.
But I see 2 problems with the NAS case.
1) The transfer speed through LAN is much slower than USB3.0 or SATA.
2) How much would such a NAS cost? As far as I can see no less than 500. For 400 I can get a machine like the one I'm asking here.
3) Any "tutorial" or "example" on what exactly do you mean?

Alright NAS cases that big are very expensive so maybe it would be better to look for a good full ATX case after all. This one supports up to 10 3.5" hdds http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
This motherboard has 10 sata III ports http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Those are two expensive parts though.

While I like this one very much, I believe the Rosewill Gaming ATX Full Tower Computer Case THOR V2 Black http://amzn.com/B0058P5S9A for $99 is as good as it, but 40 bucks less. Or do you think the silverstone has any real advantage for my needs?
The fatal1ty looks really nice, thanks for the recommendation. That said, what do you think of this others?

ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty%20Z87%20Profess...
Also, about the PSU, I'm not totally sure how much power would this draw. But WD says the hard drives draw 4.5w. So that is 45w or 90w at startup. Lets say 100w. The motherboard + micro + memory + SSD + Radeon (6570) should not draw more than another 300w. So totall 400w. So a 600w+ PSU should be more than enough, correct?

Or do you think the silverstone has any real advantage for my needs?

Also, about the PSU, I'm not totally sure how much power would this draw. But WD says the hard drives draw 4.5w. So that is 45w or 90w at startup. Lets say 100w. The motherboard + micro + memory + SSD + Radeon (6570) should not draw more than another 300w. So totall 400w. So a 600w+ PSU should be more than enough, correct?

I'm gonna try to find out more about the fatal1ty one, and if it has staggered hard drive start up option. Do you know by the way?

On the hard drive, I guess 2x the normal draw at startup.
On the psu, it is better to overprovision.
The psu will operate most efficiently in the middle third of it's range.
It will also run quieter if not at max.
If you ever wanted to use a strong graphics card like you might need to power a 4k tv, it is best to be >600w.

Thanks for your comments. But my question still remains.
WD HDDs draw 4.5w, even if I use 15w (3 times the stated watts), that is 150w.
The mother + micro + ram + ssd should not draw more than 150w.
That is 300w, so if I double it, that is 600w.
So, if I go with a 650w PSU, I should be safe, or I'm missing something?

Sure 650w would be safe. I think 550w would be safe too if it's a high quality unit. I think any solid psu in the 500-650w range will be fine. That is what I thought. Would you be so kind to recommend me one PSU around 60~90 that is at least 600w?
Here is the search options I selected, that are supposedly all tier 1 ones, but feel free to do your search.

Ah well you can't use that Z87 motherboard than as it is LGA1150. Also, I can say from experience that the i3 2100's integrated graphics cannot reliably playback hd media so you will want to use your 6570 for sure. So bad. So, I'm back at choosing Motherboard then:
ASRock PRO4-M: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro4-M/?cat=Specif...
ASRock Z77 Extreme4: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4/?cat=Spec...
ASUS P8Z77-V: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77V/
ASUS P8Z77-V PRO: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77V_PRO/
Which one should I choose? Any other better LGA 1155 one?

Wow it's going to be even harder to find a LGA1155 motherboard that has more than 6 sata ports. You may just be better off getting a little Pentium for that Z87 motherboard. As far as I understand, all four motherboards support 8 sata ports, 4 sata III and 4 sata II. That makes a total of 8 SATA's. i would need to add a SATA expansion card for the remaining 3, but I would also need to add a SATA expansion card for the SSD (11 disk) on the fatality.
The expasion card is bout 40~50 bucks, how much would it be a LGA 1150 i3?

The i3 4130 and 4150 are less than $120 and both of them are FAR more powerful than the 2100. The Haswell i3's also have WAY stronger igpus and do handle all HD media smoothly. Actually the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... is $130.
But I might be able to sell my CPU/Mother and recover some.
But just in case, of the four Mothers listed:

Do I buy the ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional $157 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... which has 10 SATA ports? Or buy any of this ones?

The Fatal1ty looks very nice, BUT, I would have to buy a new i3 also, as it is 1150 and my processor is 1155.
Also, since the i3 is about 120 I was wondering if a Pentium G3420 would be good enough for my needs, or if the difference with the i3 would be very noticeable.

Depends on whether or not you want to use your 6570 or not. If you buy a new 4th gen i3, you won't. If you keep your old i3, you will. If you get a new Pentium, you will. I do think a new Pentium would be strong enough for your needs in terms of cpu power, but not gpu power. I assume this will be sort of a HTPC sometimes or no?
Would any of those Z77 motherboard work with an add on card?

The problem here is the money. I didn't anticipate making this HTPC, so it is a surprise need.
First I thought I would spend about 100 dollars.
Then I realized the case does not includes a PSU, and that my mother does not supports so many SATAs.
Then I realized the mother has only 1 PCI slot, and that I can not use my radeon and have an 8 ports SATA expansion.
So again, it is a matter of money. Basically, what options do I have?
1) Keep: CPU. Change: Case, PSU, Mother (LGA 1155). 4 ports SATA card. Total: 400.
2) Keep: Mother. Change: Case, PSU, CPU (a new i3 with good video so I don't use the radeon), 8 ports SATA card. Total: 440.
3) Keep: nothing. Change: Case, PSU, Mother (Fatal1ty), CPU. Total: 480.
4) Keep: Nothing. Change: Case, PSU, Mother, CPU (a new Pentium), 8 ports SATA card. Total: 460.
So it is a matter of money. The difference is not that great now that I list it like this. Maybe I should do option 3.

Sorry guys to keep bugging about this, but it is not only a big investment (to put it into perspective I was originally planning on spending $100) but all the components that I buy I would import from USA, so there is no chance for error on selecting them.
To briefly recap this is to build a HTPC capable of 3D and 1080p that would be used with XBMC. At this point I’m not interested on any type of gaming, maybe a little emulation. For reasons that are not needed to discuss, I need it to also hold 10 WD Red 4TB hard drives, and 1 SSD 120GB.
So this is are the options I have chosen as of now:
MOTHERBOARD:
ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Professional http://bit.ly/1o0w17n $157 @ http://bit.ly/1rEwEYd
OR
ASRock Z97 Extreme6 http://bit.ly/1hSSlu7 $170 @ http://bit.ly/1jNs0NF
I like the Extreme6 a little bit better, as all 10 SATA are 6gbps.
CASE:
Rosewill Gaming Computer Case THOR V2 http://amzn.com/B0058P5S9A
OR
Nzxt Technologies Phantom Phan-002Gr http://amzn.com/B004WO17UC
I like the Rosewill a little bit better.
CPU:
Intel Pentium Processor G3420 3.2 GHz LGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00EUVHMR4 (I would need to use my Radeon HD 6570)
OR
Intel Core i3-4130 3.4 3 FCLGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00EUUKVXM
OR
Intel Core i3-4150 LGA 1150 http://amzn.com/B00J2LIF2S
Here it is basically a matter of going for an i3 of a Pentium. The Pentium is about 70 dollars, so I would be saving 50 bucks.
PSU:
I still have no clear idea. I want a PSU that would support whatever is decided to build the system, including 1xSSD and 10xHDD. Ideally it should cost $60 and no more than $80, unless absolutely necessary.
The power consumption is about:
Mother + CPU 112 watts (loaded).
10x WD Red 4TB @ 45w (x10)
120GB SSD (kingston) @ 2.1w
TOTAL: 160 watts.
If I double that, it is 320 watts, so a 500+ watts unit should be more than enough.
Of course I might be wrong on parts or all of this reasoning, so I'm open to criticism.
PLEASE, help.

Alright here is exactly what I would do(and basically have done)
Since cost is a concern. You should sell your i3 and 6570 and get this-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
and this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
That motherboard has 8 sata III ports and that card has 4 sata II ports so 12 all together for just over $100. Pretty much any cpu you choose will have plenty of graphics power and more than good enough cpu power for your needs. It's by far your cheapest bet.
When I was building my HTPC/server. I chose that exact motherboard and it is great. I ultimately ended up with an A10-6800k but you don't need one that good. Even a $40 A4 would be plenty for you. You could get an A6 or A8 if it makes you feel better.
I still think 550w is plenty enough. The XFX 550w 80+ Bronze is $26 after rebate on newegg and that's a pretty damn good deal for a top notch psu.
This deal ends TODAY http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Thanks for taking your time, again, to reply.
I have only two questions about your recommendation.
1) How compatible with 3D is the AMD mother + Micro? When I was making my HTPC, there where micros that had a lot of issues with 3D, and this is why I bought an i3 + Radeon.
2) I heard many times Syba makes terrible RAID controllers. What do you know about that card?
THANKS A LOT AGAIN!

These days, micro boards are just as good as ATX boards. I've never heard of any of the A series cpus having trouble with 3D. My A10 certainly does not.
I am zero familiar with Syba or any RAID controller honestly. I picked that one out because it had 4 ports and had decent reviews overall. I didn't even read a single review.

I've been reading the XBMC forum, and apparently, and A6 would do just fine.
Motherboard: $65
CPU: $65
Syba card: $40 (I need at least 4 more ports)
TOTAL: 170.
The fatality board alone is 156 + 120 for the i3, that is 270, so I'm saving 100 bucks, that is pretty good.
So, what PSU now? The case I already have, but what PSU?

For reasons I don’t want to discuss, I decided in favor of a big HTPC with 40TB of hard drive space.
These are all the parts that with the help of forum members I have selected, thanks to all of them, for a total of $452.
Now, I have checked myself and it appears that all the options should work together, but I would love if somebody with more up to date knowledge of the parts market can take a look and confirm all is working.
Case NZXT Technologies Source 210 Computer Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Addon Cooler Master 4-in-3 Device Module Cage http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
PSU SeaSonic S12G S12G-550 550W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
RAM Kingston 8GB 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1600 KVR16N11H/8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
MB ASRock Z97 Extreme6 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
CPU Intel Pentium Processor G3420 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Adapters Rosewill Molex 4pin Male to Two 15pin SATA Power Cable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
If I did all correctly, this monster HTPC should be able to run with 1 SSD and 10 4TB hard drives, and run Windows 7 + XBMC + FlexRaid.
If there is any component that I should change, please let me know. If there is a better component for the same money +/- 5%, let me know.
THANKS TO ALL FOR HELPING ME!

Go with the g3220 instead of the g3420. It's $20 cheaper. Are you going to use your HD6570? If not, I recommend going ahead and getting an i3 4130 or 4150. I would investigate the g3220, thanks. I can use the Radeon, but I believe, that the G4340 (I don't know about the G3220), is fully capable of displaying 3D and 1080p. That is what I need. No more. What do you think?

I am not 100% sure about the Haswell Pentium's igpu abilities, but I do not trust it to reliably playback 1080p media and especially not 3D. I could be wrong though. I know the i3 4130's HD4400 graphics will, but the Pentium's igpu is a purposely crippled version of the HD4400/4600.
I know from experience that Intel's HD2000 and HD2500 cannot smoothly playback all 1080p media. I'm assuming that the Pentium's graphics power is similar to that.

So that means I would have to use my Radeon. Do you see any problems with my chosen setup and the radeon? or any other problem at all?

No that 6570 would work just fine. You could attempt to use the Pentium's igpu and possibly prove me wrong, and then you have the 6570 as a back up if necessary.
My I bother you once more? Somebody that has been helping me told me that he doesn't like the price/performance ratio of the G3420.
He recommended me an AMD A6-6400K and a GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-D3H . Since that mother has only 8 sata ports, he also recommended an IBM M1015 or LSI 9240-8i controller card (around $100) plus a forward breakout cable (3ware CBL-SFF8087OCF-10M around $15).
The total is $462 vs $452 of the G3420 setup so the price difference is negligible but I'm not 100% sure of the advantages.
The advantage I see on the AMD setup is that I end up with a very high end sata controller and 16 sata ports total. That is very nice, but I don't believe I would ever use more than 11 or 12.
Also, I have quickly looked around and it appears that in general, unless overclocked, the A6 is SLOWER than the G3420. For example I looked here: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-G3420-vs-AMD-A6-6....
The advantage I see with the Intel setup is that in the future, i can drop an i3, i5 or even i7 and get a tremendous cpu upgrade, and I'm not so sure that I can achieve the same level of performance of an i5 or i7 so easily with AMD.
What do you think? Is it a good idea the AMD platform? THANKS AGAIN!

I don't like the price/performance of the g3420 at all. For $20 cheaper, you can get a g3220 and the only difference is 200mhz.
Even the g3220 is way stronger than the A6-6400k in processing power, but the A6 flips the script when it comes to graphics. The Pentium does offer a better upgrade path, but will you honestly ever need more cpu power in a build like this? I think a $40 Celeron g1820 or A4 would be more than enough cpu power, and the A4 would be enough graphics power too. If you think you need more you could just get a quad core A8 now.
AMD should be releasing the new Kaveri A4, A6, and A8 any day now. I would take a look at them. They will be stronger and more efficient than there predecessors.
That is the same motherboard I am using and the same one I recommended to you also.

And since I have the radeon, what is the advantage of the A6?

Best solution
g3220 - $55 with free shipping and no tax http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=G3220BOX&c=CJ
g3420 - $68 with free shipping and no tax http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EUVHMR4/?tag=pcpapi-20
I would still go with the g3220
If you WANT to use your 6570, then the AMDs don't offer any advantage.
