I'm a concert producer that utilizes a LOT of visual design aspects and 3D rendering, and I'm starting to put my production rack together. So, as part of that rack, I'm looking for a 4U rack mount PC case and mobo that both have enough PCIe slots to hold 4 GTX770 in SLI.

I've found 4U cases that have the number of slots I need (since each card takes up 2 slots, 8 total) but they all take passive backplane systems which I'd like to avoid, since from my looking around building one of those is expensive as heck. I do remember seeing an ASUS mobo that had 4 PCIe slots in it, but I can't remember which one it was.

Ah, thanks, I think the Rampage was the one I was looking at before.

A standard desktop case will not work though, it needs to be a 4U rack mount case like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CKf37O...

That case fits an ATX, but has the same problem I found with most of the other ones - it only has 7 expansion slots when I need 8 to fit 4 GPUs.

That's still a standard case. It needs to be a rack mount case, which are meant to fit in racks like this: http://www.stevesproaudio.com.au/assets/applets/Power_a...

I would think 2 770s > 1 780, and therefore 4 770s > 2 780s. What I'm doing is 3D rendering from software such as Autodesk 3DS Max, Maya, etc in 4K and extremely high detail with advanced shaders. The idea with having 4 770s is that rendering could be done in parallel using each card separately when not in SLI to speed up the process. However, if 2 780s would do the same job just as fine, I would go with that option since I've already found multiple rack cases that work and have at least 4 expansion slots.

Sorry I forgot. Maybe this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
It has 8 expansion slots so it will fit your GPUs

Hmm. That one's got all the slots I need, but it says it's for the SSI EEB mobo form factor. That ASUS Rampage board is extended ATX which seems to be approximately the same size as SSI EEB, but I'm not sure if the screw holes will line up correctly.

I think they probably will.
