Spilled Thermal Paste

My laptop had a history of shutting down when running programs such as games. After some researching, I figured out that it may be due to overheating. I decided to clean out the fan and apply new thermal paste to allow the system to be cool again (because the laptop was several years old without anyone doing it). When applying the thermal paste, some went a little to the sides and went on the little gold things around the area where you need to apply the paste (it didn't spill underneath on the pins). I cleaned it off and when putting the computer back together it has a black screen on start up. I made sure that everything was plugged in properly. I could hear the fan and see the lights of the laptop turn on, its just a black screen.

Is there anyway to fix this?
The little gold things are now silver, if I manage to clean them back to gold, could it fix the problem? is there anyway to do so?

I picked it up at the local computer store.
"HEATSINK COMPOUNDS"
Thermal Conductivity:>2.17W/m-k
Thermal resistance: <0.06 degrees Celsius-inSquared/W
10% Silver Included

that is what it says

Alright. First, clean everything off. I'd use a paper towel or cloth at first. Some people like coffee filters. Whatever, just clean it off. Then use a q-tip with some alcohol to get it very clean. Clean everything, then show me a picture of what it looks like after you cleaned it.

If it looks good, I'll have you re-apply the thermal paste the right way.

yeah get the majority off with a paper towel or whatever. Be careful not to spread it worse into the leads, although from looking at the pics I don't think you can make it worse :) Then go over it again with q-tip and alcohol.

I honestly think you can raise this one from the dead if this all goes right.

It is cleaning up pretty good, but the pins are still kind of silver, do I need to keep rubbing them? And how much force do I apply, are these as fragile as the pins behind?

no there is no gap at all, I believe only one of them had a pad. But I knew that it was a thermal problem when I opened the laptop because the pad was like completely gone. Only the corners were there.
