Let me start with some back story. Had old amd setup that had some issues (probably mb related) and stopped working. To be honest, someone kind of got me good. Sold it to me for $300 bucks and it only worked for afew weeks. Got a nice monitor out of the deal though. :D

A friend across the country sent me his old Motherboard http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01...
with 9 gigs of triple channel ram and an i7 980x. Another friend gave me his old radeon 4890 hd.

At first, I couldn't get it to boot. My friend (the one who gave me the graphics card) got it to boot by moving some jumpers. When it would boot, I'd get a message that the system fan wasnt working and press f2 to continue. I expected that, as the case was the one from the amd build, it's an old dell rackmount style case. I plan to switch cases after I get everything working.

I got a new copy of windows 8.1 and after some fiddling got it to boot to windows, and began driver installation. I made the terrible mistake of updating my bios, and the computer crashed. Everything went from bad to way worse since. Up until that point, any mistakes I'd made thus far in the learning experience could be fixed by reinstalling windows. Now, the installs would freeze, hang, or I'd just get a blue screen (not the one you get when your pc overheats and crashed, this was more of a windows one; light blue, infact) saying there was an error and windows couldn't be installed, and I could shut down.

After talking to some friends we found the problem may be the hard drive, since it was my old one from that old amd build. I borrowed a 1tb internal from a friend just for testing purposes. So now, when I turn on the pc, the keyboard isn't detected. So I can't press f2 to get any further. I solved this problem by unplugging the hard drive, which allows the usb ports to be active. After pressing f2, I plug the sata cord back into the hard drive, and allows the 8.1 disk to do it's work. When I go to install, my hard drive is "unallocated" and is " 0.0 mb " And this is where I'm stuck. I've played around with the administrative command prompts abit, but I really don't know what I'm doing at all.

I've been struggling to get this computer running ever since I was first sold a lemon in 2012, and it seems for every problem I solve, another one presents itself. I'll admit, this is a huge learning experience, and as long as I can keep moving forward with it little by little I won't give up. I hope I gave enough information in my post, please please help me.

When you get to the point where it asks where do you want to install windows click on advanced. delete the partition and repartition and format and continue with the install.

There is no partition yet. It's an unallocated drive as of now. I don't know how to partition it, or get it to show as more than 0.0 mb

I click install, enter my serial key, and then select customer (advanced) install, and am brought to the menu where you select which drive to install windows to.
