I'm ok with the file transfer procedure. My possible speed bump is that once I transfer from old HD, I want to bring my stuff back to a newly installed 1TB drive in the formerly empty bay. Possible? If yes, is it necessary to switch new drive and old drive to each other's previous bay?
I want to designate the new 1TB drive as c: and use the orginal drive for mirroring.

Solution
After the installation you can open the external hard drive and new internal hard drive in explorer windows (windows 7 "snap" feature makes it easy to line the two windows up side by side - use the combination of the Windows flag key and the arrow keys at the same time). Win-left to bring the external drive to the left hand half of the screen and win-right arrow to bring the internal drive to the right half. I would to the start orb and click on the username in the upper right hand of the start menu to open your user folder and move that to the right as indicated, then just manually copy from external drive to user folder (left to right)

Thanks, yes it is SATA, installed in the old box and ready to receive data that has been moved to an EXTERNAL 3TB SATA drive for interim storage, pending Win 7 install.

After the Win 7 install, can I specify that the data on EXTERNAL SATA is moved back to the new internal SATA drive that is in the old box? [CAPS for an attempt at clarity]

....thanks again,

SchizTech, makes sense to me [at my geezer bedtime]. I'll revisit tomorrow, think it over again, and get started on my Win 7 quest. I guess I'll be able to find the "orb" when I'm [what passes for] fresh. Thank you again!
