PCIe x8 slot not working with PCIe x1 device

I got a new wireless card (Amped Wireles AC1200) and it's PCIe x1. I wanted to put it in my PCIe x8 slot because the x1 slot is too close to the graphics card.

Problem:
It works just fine in the x1 slot but it doesn't work (not detected) in the x8 slot. I thought they were always backward compatible.

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H and I'm wondering if I need to somehow enable this PCIe slot to work with a x1 device or something?

Pcie x1 will work in any pcie slot size which btw it's a x16 slot at x8.

If it works in the x1 slot then why don't you keep it there? Sometimes there are settings in the bios to enable/disable slots. Have you checked? Backwards compatibility refers to version, size is irrelevant.

I actually have a similar problem, well actually is my brother. Situation is as follows: I built a PC for him and used an Athlon II x4 750K on a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H. Installed a R7 250X on the PCIe x16 (the one at the top of the PCIe slots), then as the VGA covers the one PCIe x1 slot I connected the wireless PCIe x1 adapter to the remaining PCIe x4 (the one at the bottom). The adapter (TP-LINK TL-WN881ND Wireless N300 PCI Express Adapter) works connects to the internet and all seemed good. So for the OP, the PCIe x1 card works on a PCIe x4 slot, which actually is x16 sized.

Now when he tries to play Titanfall he gets disconnected from server, in the case of playing Dota 2 the game lags a lot, I'm assuming is network related. Now when he plugs an ethernet cable, instead of using wireless problems go away.

Used the same wireless adapter on other build, though the MoBo was an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0, so I had the possibility to use an PCIe x1. No problems on that PC whatsoever.

I was thinking is it possible that when putting the VGA under heavy load, it makes the PCIe x4 slot decrease it's performance causing the wireless connectivity a negative effect?

It's because the 1x slot is right under the graphics card fan, only like 1mm clearance. I looked in the BIOS and didn't see any relevant settings, oh well.
