Hi guys, I have an ASUS M3N-HD motherboard running AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core processor 2.2GHz. Is there an upgrade I can do to the CPU (with this motherboard) that will be significant for gaming? Or am I going to have to upgrade the motherboard as well?

Here's the compatibility list - http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/M3N-HD_HDMI.html

I just don't know anything about CPU's so I appreciate the help!

Motherboard supports the top of the line from back then you have quite a few options.

1090T and 1100T are the best, but I'm not seeing any still available. If you can find a new or used Phenom 2 X4, or Phenom 2 X6 they would be the best you can do.

Ok thanks. I'm looking at Phenom 2 X4's right now, but I can only find them used. What are people's thoughts on buying used CPUs?

For the price you may end up paying for low supply, high demand CPUs like a 1100t, you may be better off in the long run just buying newer lines like fm2 or am3+ board and 750k or fx 6300

EBay has 1100t used for @$225+, FX6300 for less than $100, so a new mobo, and CPU will cost far less, even buying new ram would still bring you up even, and you'd end up with new parts vrs older and used.

Well I'm looking at the Phenom 2 X4 975 right now. Seems to be the best for the money, and from my understanding there's not much of a point to go for six cores for gaming. But once again, I can only find it used. Is it too sketchy to buy a used one?

EBay has brand new x4 975 $145 after shipping. Only bad part is its in China, so may take a few weeks to get here.
