I am currently leaning for the r9-270x, though the r9-280 has 3GB of ram(the downfall is it is only 827mhz). If I decide on the r9-280 how much can it be overclocked? What wattage should the PSU be if I do overclock it, possibly overclock the cpu(amd-6300) and maybe crossfire later on. Though I am kinda thinking there is a chance that I won't be doing crossfire anyway.

One reason I am prefering the xfx is because of the lifetime warranty on the DD versions

For overclocking both the cpu and one of those gpus, I'd recommend at least a 550w high quality psu. XFX 550w is ~50USD right now.

I'd imagine the 280 might be able to hit 900Mhz at least. But i have no experience with overclocking one of those. My xfx 270x DD overclocks at least 100MHz though. Hope this helps a little bit.

Clock speed doesn't matter with different gpu chips.
You can overclock the R9 280 to the speed of R9 280X.
(R9 270 OC= R9 270X )< 760< R9 280< (GTX 770 = R9 280X) < (R9 290 = GTX 780) < R9 290X < GTX 780ti

I want it to be around 1000mhz or somewhere close I also found a r9-270x with 4gb memory, which I may also consider as well.

So would it be safe to maybe overclock it to 1000mhz or would that matter at all on this card?

I mean you could try, it doesn't need to be 1ghz for it to be better than a 270x. Just throwing that out there. Each model works different from the previous. the 280 working at the 850mhz probably is better than the 270x at 1ghz because of the number of stream processors.

One last question, why does sites say that it needs to have a minimal of 750W psu, which doesn't sound right. Even xfx's site says the same thing.

A quality 550-650w from seasonic/xfx/antec would do fine. If you're wondering about the psu quality just ask around.

I am also starting to see posts that XFX cards tends to get hotter compared to other brands, which is a bit scary. I like the lifetime warranty on the DD versions of XFX since I do plan to keep it for a while.

Its lifetime warranty if you register your product within 30 days you bought it and it depends on what country you bought it from. I believe you lose your lifetime warranty if you get a replacement gpu.

It should be fine if you manually control the fan speed. My 270x runs ~70C or so when its under load. I'd imagine it'd be relatively the same for the 280 or the 280x as well.

As long as you have proper airflow you should be fine.

If there's one intake fan in the front and one exhaust fan in the back. It should be fine.

So far I am thinking msi or Asus. Too many bad stories around xfx at least for my video card. Wish they had lifetime warranty but too many issues reported about xfx is awful
