USB ports won't detect new devices in Windows 7

Help! I have a new sony digital recorder but the PC says Code 31, windows cannot load drivers. But when I plug an older recorder (same brand) which I used to plug in the same port, it is detected. I try updating the driver, but it says updated already. Still won't detect new device. please help! I have Windows 7 desktop.

Try going into device manager(WITH THE RECORDER PLUGGED IN) find where it is(May be a yellow emergency sign, post a pic and we will be able to id it if you cannot), delete the items, replug in recorder, and that should do it.

Be sure the usb ports are either attacted to the mother board or the plugs are in the motherboard

Did you try re-installing the USB controller already? And what above device manager to see if it is detected but with an error?
