Strange DNS names and IP resolves

Hey guys.

Recently I was asked to administer the IT network at a smallish company. There are 6 PCs, 2 network printers, 3 switches and 1 router.
There is a strange problem with one of the PCs and our SAGE accounts package - if SAGE runs on this PC, it kills SAGE for everyone else.

Investigating this issue has led to me to a whole host of other issues, but one in particular is making me tear my hair out.

The name of this PC is SAM-PC, and it's running windows 7 home. Pinging SAM-PC gives me a specific IP address.
Pinging PINKIE gives me the same IP address. No-one here knows what PINKIE was.

When I connect directly to the BT router, it lists the name as SAM-PC.
When our IT 'savvy' director runs a report on something called kissthenet, it lists the name as PINKIE.

Other windows 7 machines, can connect directly to \\SAM-PC. On my windows 8 laptop, I can only connect to \\PINKIE.

I'm not even sure if this is an actual problem, or more a minor annoyance.
If anyone can help in any way I'd much appreciate it.

I can provide more detailed information on anything if required.

Thanks, Chopper.

Hi

I work in a local authority
Many years ago PC's were named after a label with a serial number. [B001, B002 .....]

Some how a batch of PC's had the same serial number that had previously been issued and hence same PC name
Strange things started to happen.

Since there are a limited number of PC's & devices to test you need to visit every one to determine the network name and network details

or use suitable network diagnostics which does not crash when two devices have the same name & IP address

Is IP address fixed or issued by a router or server or a combination ?
even some switches & routers have IP address & name

look at nirsoft utilities such as NetResView

check it the router has any programing...

check it the router has any programing about network devices, maybe a white list with out of date info

Thanks for the response Mike.

I have arranged for some down time later in the week. I suspect that at some point the former IT guy built a PC named PINKIE, connected it to the network and then renamed it to it's present name.
I plan to reset all the DNS entries and then re-add everything singly. I'm lucky in that this isn't actually causing an issue for the time being.

The IP addresses are all provided via DHCP from a BT Infinity HUB, with 2 static IP addresses in place for a wireless transmitter and receiver.

I'm going to take a look at some more utilities as well as the one you provided.

Thanks, Chopper.
