so the new z97 boards just hit the market here where i like and i wanted to know the difference between them:
1)GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-GAMING 7 Intel Z97 Motherboard
2)GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-GAMING 5 Intel Z97 Motherboard
3)GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-GAMING 3 Intel Z97 Motherboard

those are the 3 affordable ones right now, how do they fare vs z87

I would say get the cheapest one and spend the money else on a CPU or graphics card.
The Z97 chipset is a bit better then the Z87.

z97 has some advantages like Broadwell compatibility and m.2 storage support. So it's better to get a z97 board atm.

And Gigabyte z97 Gaming 7 is the best bang for the buck in the z97 market atm. And Z97 Gaming 5 comes second. Compared to same priced boards they have all similar features but better components, especially in the vrm department.
