i5 4690 vs i7 3770

Are those your only options? The 4690 would be better in anything that uses 4 or less threads, more than 4, the 3770 would be better. Best bang for the buck is the Xeon 1230v3. Nearly identical performance to an i7 4770, lacks IGP, so it has a lower TDP, so it uses less power.

well you beat me to it I was going to say if his board supports the xeon chip he may want to look at it[ Xeon 1230v3]

the bang for the buck is hands down the i5 processor.
has better integrated graphics. and almost identical speeds to the i7

integrated graphics -- something I did not need --- i5 no hyperthreding-- xeon covers i7 specs, with out on-chip gpu at near i5 price..
