Hi there, I've an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 and all 4 SATA cables are in use. Now I would like to add one (maybe 2) additional HDD drives but I'm not sure, if I can. I see 2 more ATA connections on the Mobo and 3 more 4port cables. So I can I just split from the 4port to SATA and connect to one of the 2 ATA's? Thank you very much for your help.

Thank you. I'm still wondering though, if I can go ahead and use what I've available? Am I right that there are 6 ATA connections on this Mobo and can I connect there and use the split plug in order to connect with the 4port cables (since all SATA are taken). Any advise is very appreciated.

I haven't heard of a split cable before, the old days of master/slave ATA are apparently gone.

What I'd do is that I'd take the drive that has the least storage space in general, relocate the data somewhere else temporarily, format and sell it, then buy another drive with ridiculous storage, maybe a WD red or blue. Its hard to get a >decent< SATA expansion card for under 50€ which could be easily invested into bigger storage.

There are also portable hard drives you can invest into, also NAS machines, that kind of things, and it saves the hassle of relocating all your hard drives if you ever decide to do a major overhaul of your system.

Oh, another biggie is that you buy a whole new PC and make a network file server. Thanks to AMD's APU's, such solutions are cheaper than ever before!

This is off topic so this is the last time I will indulge you, okay?

A computer is not like any other household items you got there, if you don't understand what going on the outside just follow this simple rule:

If plug fits, use it. ;)
