I'm wondering which is the better of these two boards in terms of features /OC'ing/ Component quality. I know there's a Z97 version of the UD3H out but I prefer the colour scheme of the Z87 one but also really like the new Asus.

If you don't plan to upgrade to broadwell in the future and fancy using an M.2 storage get Gigbayte z87-ud3h. Way better in terms of component quality. z87 ud3h has true 8 phase digital phases by International Rectifier, top notch IR mosfets etc, 10k caps from chemi-con... Asus z97-A has 4 phase pwm with a doubler (or virtual) driver and noone knows the quality of the controller since Asus decided to hide the manufacturer and specs for some weird reason. Fets are also less efficient lfpaks from nxp. Still enough for a mild overclock though.

Also Gigabyte z87-ud3h has better sound chip and overall quality.

But still I'm not comfortable to suggest a slightly older technology. Since you would want to upgrade to Broadwell in the future (even though there won't be a reaaaaly big difference) or use an m.2 storage.

Thanks for the reply, so how would the Asus Z97-Pro compare to the UD3H? I don't care much about m.2, as for Broadwell it's kind of up in the air, 4770k should last a few years.

They are about the same in VRM department. Z97 Pro should have a 6+2 digital phase doubled to 12 with some doublers. Z87x-ud3h still slightly better though, but you won't really feel a difference. Also z97 pro has slightly better audio codec which is Realtek ALC1150. Z87x-ud3h has ALC 898. They are actually very very close in terms of snr but ALC1150 is better in amplifiers which makes a difference especially when you use a headset.

It's all about the price in the end. I guess z97 pro is about 180-190$. With this price (actually a little less) I would get a Gigabyte z97x-Gaming 7. It's like a renamed z87x-ud3h with a different colour-scheme.

Thanks! Think I'll go with the UD3H since they're basically the same and it's aesthetically a little more in line with the rest of my rig
