Will the Corsair Obsidian 250D have enough space for a AMD Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X?
Will this case provide enough space for this gpu?

No, the maximum GPU length for that case is 290mm, the GPU you want is 305mm

However I did find a forum where somebody did manage to install one by removing the metal endplate: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=126599

The case lists 290mm for the video card and your card lists as being 305mm so it does not look to fit.

Thanks - I might just end up going with a Mid Tower ATX case - I was thinking about the Fractal Design Define R4: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/fractal-design-define-r4-black-pearl-mid-tower-ultra-low-noise-performance-case-usb-30-with-silent-1 - Is there anywhere i could get this case cheaper?

Seems about as cheap as it will go.

That is actually a fair size case and has room to grow.
