Alright, here's the issue: I have a WD My Passport that is acting odd.
I can plug it into my computer, and it checks it, recognizes it and then nothing. I can't access it or do anything useful with it. I can open it in Device manager and it gives me the options of Disable, Uninstall, Update Driver and Scan For Hardware Changes, but I can't use it to store files. When I click on it there's an anomaly, the volumes page is blank. I can tell it to populate, but it doesn't do anything. Anybody able to help?

Solution
I wanted to add that I'm having the exact same issue.

I disconnected it from my usual computer and plugged the drive into a different computer. It powered up, computer detected it, and automatically installed all of the drivers.

Cannot browse device in My Computer (Can't even see the device there, for that matter. No drive letter is assigned, and it's completely absent.)
Can see "WD My Passport 070A Usb Device" under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager.
Can see the device in Disk Management. Showing up as a 2TB drive. Status is "Not Initialized". Whenever I try to initialize the device by using MBR or GPT, I get a message saying that the device is Write Protected.

At a total loss. The drive is there, but nothing about it is...

[strike]Volume is blank, Layout is simple, Type is basic, File System is blank, Status is Healthy (OEM Partition), File Space and Free Space are 14.75 GB, Fault Tolerance is no, with 0% Overhead. Right clicking on it provides no new options opening up.[/strike]

Wait, completely listed the wrong stuff, idiot's moment. It says it's not initialized, but that I can't do anything because it's write protected.

There is something amiss if there is nothing under volume and the file system is blank. When you right click is there an option to change the drive letter or path or an option to format? Is this a new drive or one that you have had for a while? What is the total capacity of the drive? I only ask because 14.75GB seems a bit small as far as storage space goes.

Can't see it under those, but I can under Devices and Hardware. In D&H the properties it says everything should be working fine, but the Manufacturer, Model Number and Description are all unavailable. And sorry about that misunderstanding earlier.

I'm new here and I'm afraid I've selected to "post an answer" when I actually want to add that I too am having this same issue with the particular WD Passport and it has worked fine until July 6th. Any help would be greatly appreciated because like everyone else, I've got files I can't replace stored on this external storage device. I can't help but wonder if it doesn't have something to do with a recent Microsoft update maybe?

Thought I'd share what I have found. Mine was doing the same thing. This didn't start until this week after having downloaded Windows 8.1 updates, which I can't help but think may have had something to do with it, however, as oddly as this is, I used the cord from my camera to connect the drive to my computer and it worked. The cord that came from my passort works with my camera but will no longer work with the WD passport. Nonetheless I was able to recover everything on my external drive and will be purchasing another one as a back-up even though this one appears to be operating normally now.
