i have a green, pink, yellow, black, and blue and want to know if one was meant for surround sound

They all are, most surround sound systems have multiple cables, one for each sound channel, so in your case 5.1 surround.

It doesn't vary much. Green, yellow, and blue are standardize, they are always speakers, microphone, line in. Wikipedia has a nice list which corresponds well with the sound cards i have seen with Black, Grey, and Orange being your other 3 colors for rear, side, and center
