I need a video card for my first computer build. I've been debating between:

GTX 770 2gb/4gb
R9 280x
R9 290

My typical use:
-1080p single monitor gaming
-plan to use dual monitors but I dont think it affects anything if I only game on one?
-don't plan to SLI/Crossfire in near future
-1 card for next few years before I have to upgrade

I've been trying to stay up to date on news regarding GTX 800 series release but it doesn't look good... Seems like it'll be Q4 2014 or sometime in 2015. I really really wanted to wait but that's gonna be another 4-6+ months it seems like. I heard that the AMD R9 cards run hotter/louder than nvidia gtx 770. I'm not sure how much VRAM I need too because I heard games will start needing at least 3gb in the near future? I guess to me it doesn't matter too much if I can't play a game on ultra or whatever.

Also, it seems like you can find R9 280x/290 cards for relatively cheap (at least the less famous brands like XYX/PNY etc. Are these cards still good for my needs? Do they run hotter/louder?

If you get the stock cooler with an r9 series, yes it will definitely run hotter than the 770. If you're playing single monitor gaming, but running dual, I'd recommend 280x or the 290. The 290 is basically the same price as the 770 4gb and stronger.

They all run relatively similar in my opinion, they're in safe temperatures. If you go for a 290, don't get a stock cooler. Get one with an aftermarket cooler.
