Alright, so I'm doing my first build very soon, and after lots of messing about and changing my mind I've decided to just go for it, save up and get a great high end rig that will last me a good while, my parts (besides the GPU) are:

Corsair Graphite 760t Windowed Case
Asus Maximus IV Hero C2 Motherboard
i7 4770k (with an aftermarket air cooler…. probably noctua)
Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1866Mhz RAM
Western Digital Black 1TB Hard Drive
Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
Corsair RM850 PSU

For a while I've been set on the EVGA GTX 780 Classified (3GB VRAM) as my GPU, but recently I've been considering the R9 290x (4GB VRAM), although I haven't decided on an aftermarket option.

My uses for the system gaming-wise will be Skyrim (ultra-modded), GTA V when it finally comes out, BF4, Bioshock Infinite, Minecraft, and a bunch of other games as well as newer games as they come out. I also plan on doing daily recording of the games, rendering and editing, as well as playing around and maybe getting serious with animation and indie game design.

At the moment my monitor runs at 1080p, but soon I plan to upgrade to the Shimian monitor, probably two of them, which are 2560x1440p.

What card would you recommend to best suit my needs, doesn't even have to be one of those two but my budget is £400 (pretty much exactly the price of the 780 I have my eye on).

Any and all help is appreciated,

Curly Joe

Solution
Asus R9 290X DirectCU II or MSI Lightning R9 290X. the best option over a GTX 780.

For 1440p, the R9 290X with greater Vram will benefit greatly (GTX 780 will not perform as good at 1440p, especially two.), and the wider memory bus also helps.

Alright so the 290/290x are definitely the better cards it seems, and yeah I was thinking the extra GB of VRAM would help with the many mods I'll be using on Skyrim, as well as the extra monitor/resolution, I also considered two 760s but the power consumption was a bit of a down set.

Will I need any aftermarket cooling like a water block for this? because I'd like the quieter air cooling, or is that just for more serious over clocks?

That is indeed a very sexy backplate, doesn't really go with my colour scheme though

I was going to go for 4GB editions, but yeah I still feel better off with the 290x

Alright thank you, I'll go for that card, I'll pick you as a solution but is there a way I can thank Suztera as well?

Only one I'm afraid, but always make sure you go for a good cooled model, Hawaii PRO and XT chips are very hot running.

I was basing that info on this but it could be wrong.
