I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that current has a single Hynix 1GB 2Rx16 PC2-6400S-666-12, but I want to add another 1GB RAM...can I use a Hynix 1GB 2Rx16 PC3-8500S-7-10-A1 to do this? I have my eye on an auction for 2 of the PC3s, so if I could replace the original PC2 with a pair of PC3s, I would also be able to do that.

Does your computer have 2 RAM slots?

You can't mix DDR2 and DDR3 memory. Sorry.

If your rig is currently using DDR2 memory (as indicated by the first model above), then you have to install DDR2 type of memory into the system.

Yes, there are 2 RAM slots. Since I can't mix, is it possible to replace the DDR2 with a DDR3, and then also use the second DDR3 in the second slot?

Yes it is possible. Purchase DDR3 RAM, uninstall the old DDR2 RAM, and then install the DDR3 RAM. You might have to go into the BIOS and reset the settings to default.

No, absolutely not. You can't install DDR3 memory instead of DDR2 memory. They are incompatible standards. You can't simply put DDR3 memory into a DDR2-based laptop.

Please note that I unselected the previous Best Answer as it is not correct. I don't want to send the wrong message to other users. Honest mistake, I am sure, but not one to be recorded as a BA.
