I am going to be either putting my 7850 in my gfs pc or buying her a 750ti , but if i am gonna spend 130-150 for one i might as well upgrade mine for a little more.

so what i am wondering is if there anything under the $300 mark that's a major upgrade for me or should i just get her the ti and wait till next year to upgrade (happy with what i got but we always want more).

currently looking at the SAPPHIRE 100364-4GL Radeon R9 270X 4GB -219$
SAPPHIRE DUAL-X 100363BF4L Radeon R9 280X 3GB - 247$

I have a 750w psu to work with also doesn't have to be amd .

That's very good, the Corsair TX 750W is perfectly able to handle a single R9 280X, it may even handle two infact.

They do overestimate a little on the PSU's. But your GF's Thermaltake TR2 430W isn't a good quality PSU in comparison to yours. I'm sure it could easily handle a 60W GTX 750ti, but the 7850 is pushing it a little without...

The R9 270X is equivalent to a souped up AMD 7870. It's an upgrade, but not a worthwhile one.

The R9 280X on the other hand, is equivalent to the AMD 7970 Ghz edition. It's a much more worthwhile upgrade.

Compared to Nvidia, the 280X is similar in performance to the GTX 770. As the 770 is essentially an overclocked GTX 680.

ATM the GTX 770 costs just above $300, while the R9 280X costs under $300 (more so with rebates). So the R9 280X would be the best upgrade for your sub $300 budget. It's a good improvement, but it depends if your happy with it.

Which brand of 750W PSU do you have ? The 280X requires at least a quality 550W+ PSU & those can ouptup over 40amps on the 12v rail, so minimum, high 30's amps as close to 40 as possible.

I'd suggest having at the very minimum a PSU like the Corsair CX 500W with 38amps/456W on the 12v rail. That retails for about $49. But you could spend more if you wanted too e,g XFX/Seasonic 500W-550W .
