So I have an MSI 890FXA-GD65 - I love this board to death and then I had to go and ruin it by updating the BIOS via the utility that MSI provides.... Why would I do a stupid thing? Was planning on upgrading the processor and knew it would be necessary,so I wanted to get it out of the way....

Needless to say now, the board won't POST. No startup, no signal to the graphics card, nothing... so I'm stuck.. I've left the CMOS battery out overnight, I've moved the clear cmos back and forth, etc... so I'm out of ideas on how to get this thing back to normal after that flash. I'm assuming it's a goner at this point unless someone has any other ideas... I don't have VGA capabilities, so it's reliant on the video card to get a screen, which isn't happening, not to mention I don't even think the USB ports have power nor the PS2 port either as the PS2 at least flashes but then keyboard goes dead...

So, if there are no other options - Which AM3/AM3+ Motherboard should I get to house my Phenom II 965 Black for the time being and would be good for the 8320/8350 going forward.

Thanks for helping out this fool!

If you love the board so much, you could send it back to MSI to get it reinstalled, provided it's still in guarantee.

If you cannot even get into BIOS, it looks like you have bricked your MB.

bios recovery link---- you know if it works its all good if not your no better off i'd try it.. your all ready down with it .. but if its the Award BIOS that floppy drive may be an issue I got 2 of them but only my real old boards have ide to hook them up to

then I wonder if all the newer ami bios will work as he says with the optical drive on a cd??
I did find that link interesting I just hope I don't ever have to find out..

still not seen if the bios chip is soldered in or socketed..

looks like it is soldered but msi has a feature called m-flash which has the bios on a usb stick, which can actually be booted from

Yeah, that's what I did was used M-Flash (which apparently reading now is VERY buggy)... So I have the old Bios version saved on the flash drive and the new one..... Can't boot from the Flash Drive though if the Bios doesn't come up though, so stuck with the blank screen of death.

I contacted MSI and they said the chip is soldered on, so I submitted an RMA request. We'll see if maybe they're nice about it, since they know M-Flash is buggy eventhough it's just outside of the warranty period...

ok not bad makes for a nice back up if needed but when I look at msi m-flash page it did not state that just how to flash and not how to boot from it ..

but i know nothing about it

Well, RMA is a no go since it's 4 months outside the warranty period. No budging from MSI on this one when I called.

So it looks like AM3+ shopping is commencing....

Thought on the Gigabyte board below?? OR do we know when AMD is going to be releasing processors that will surpass the FX series?

I've never had a Gigabyte board... Always have gone ASUS or MSI, but this one has a ton of reviews and an appealing price... ?

That gigabyte board is one of the most popular 990FX boards. Revision 4 has been out about a year now too. So I'm sure they got the bugs ironed out. If you cripple a bios with the dual bios you can recover with the second bios. Plus gigabyte uses more metal in the MB's than other manufacturers.
