It will if the "650W" PSU is of good quality and has sufficient +12V rail specs. Do you know the make/model of the PSU? (I'm assuming it is not a stock Dell unit)

Whoa! That is a very low quality, cheap PSU. I can almost guarantee that it is not a true "650W" PSU. Unless you can verify the +12V rating on the nameplate of the unit, I would not use that with the 151W gfx card. Does it even have the necessary 2 x 6 pin PCIe power cables needed to power the card?

I was referrring to the PSU having 2 x PCIe 6 pin connectors, not the card. The cards usually come with Molex adapters just in case. But yeah, the upgrade would be a wise idea.

Just a suggestion... unless you are determined to get that older hot running HD 5850, you could buy a new GTX 750 Ti that will out perform the 5850 and not require an aux power cable. AND, you wouldn't have to upgrade your PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487024

well i bought the corsair tx650 installed it hooked everything up and.....bam same damn thing. video card will not boot. fan on video card is on but blank screen. should i install drivers before i install card? should install the ati catylist before card? really dont think it would matter since it wont boot anyway. any suggestions? i have a nvidia quadro that works just fine but i am trying to run 3 monitors and that wont do it. so i thought i would give eyeinfinity a try.

Drivers won't matter until Windows is loaded. If you are not getting a display with the card in the slot at boot, it could be several things... including a bad card. Do you know if the card works?

Maybe you better list some specs of your system. CPU, motherboard, etc. I have no idea what "16x2 5600" refers to. Dell made a whole slew of those 531s with various components.

1) Does the PC produce a display and boot when the monitor is connected to the integrated video output from the MB?

2) How are you connecting the card to the monitor... DVI to DVI, DVI to VGA, VGA to VGA, HDMI to HDMI, ...?

3) On some older Dells (about that era) you needed to go into BIOS and manually select the PCIe X16 slot instead of the integrated video. They didn't auto switch like boards do today.

No boot or beep? Go back into BIOS and enable the integrated video and re-connect your cable to it. (You may have to remove the card from the slot). Let's be sure you can get a display and boot with the integrated video before going any further.

No way you'd want that for 3 monitors (1080p each?). The R7-250 is a (single) 720p card at best.

Hi guys. Sorry to bother you. I am just wondering did road_dog get the graphics card working. I have the same pc and I was hoping to upgrade my GPU next week. I am looking at either a GTX650 or GTX650ti . I have an Antec 500w PSU ordered so ill put that in when it arrives. I suppose my main question is will my motherboard support the card. I would really love to upgrade as I am currently running an Nvidia 8600gt. I will eventually upgrade the RAM to 4GB also. and maybe a 6000+ 3.1 GHZ processor too. road_dog never replied yet. Is your Inspiron 531 (AMD) from the same era his is? My daughter has the Intel version; an Inspiron 530 from the C2D 6600 era that works with just about any card I've tried as long as one manually changes the BIOS to PCIe. I can't see any reason those cards wouldn't work either. The new Maxwell-equipped GTX 7xx cards may cause some issues in some OEM PCs due to their new architecture. But older cards should be fine. At least that was my experience.

Clutchc. I'm not sure if my pc is from the era that you said. I have an amd dual core processor in it at the moment. I have done a lot of reading recently about the type of gpu that my motherboard will support and either a gtx650 or radeon hd7750. I think that the nvidia card is the better of the 2 . I don't want to go any higher than a gtx650 incase it damages my system. Unless I'm totally sure it can take a higher one.

No card will damage your system unless you have too weak a PSU. Then there's the chance that it could overload the PSU and cause a cheap PSU to burn out, taking something else with it. But even the low end Antec PSUs are good quality, and the 500W versions should handle any card that won't require more than a single 6 pin aux power connection.
The only other issue is bottle neck. A weak CPU won't be able to keep up with a fast gfx card. The result will be CPU bottle neck.

I really appreciate all your advice and info clutchc. I would say that the antec 500w should handle the gpu without any issues especially that it's a good quality psu. I think I will upgrade my cpu to the Brisbane 6000+ 3.1 ghz cpu. That should keep up with the gpu. The recommended highest cpu is that one although I have heard of people putting in a 6400+ 3.2 ghz but it's not recommended. Besides there would not be much difference performance wise between the 6000 and 6400.

The GTX 650 or 650 Ti would be a good choice for that CPU. There may be some bottleneck in certain CPU limited games, but overall, OK. The R7-260 would also be a good choice if you want to get a bit more performance than the HD 7750/R7-250.
