Problems with USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports

I have a frustrating problem regarding my Asus M5A97 R 2.0 motherboard. I built this PC about four months ago and it's been running smoothly, however lately I've got some issues with USB ports that seems to be consistently getting worse.

I have 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 ports on the front of my case, none of which work. Well, they work, but when I plug something in, no matter what it is it keeps telling me the device is unrecognised, I tried reinstalling drivers and what not and nothing works. The actual USB ports on the back of my motherboard also have issues. I have a Belkin Wirless adapter (N300) which requires me to plug it out and back in 15-20 times before it'll work, strangely though my mouse and keyboard work just fine.

I had trouble installing the latest USB drivers from Asus, the setup.exe would not run, but either way the drivers I was trying to install hadn't been changed from the drivers I installed when I set up my PC so it's still technically up to date.

Someone suggested that I reinstall Windows but I would do anything to avoid going down that route because it means I need to get hold of an extra HDD to put important files on and I need to hold of a USB with the Windows ISO and it's just an awkward pain in the neck. This whole issue is so frustrating and any help at all would be appreciated.

Solution
You can download an ISO file of whichever windows you have and burn it to a DVD and use that to install windows. As long as you have a legal activation code and are installing on the same MB, it will work.
Sounds like a reinstall might be needed. And if you don't have an extra HD already with all your important files on it, what do you do if the drive dies, you loose all files anyways. Best to backup stuff now.

You can use options like google drive or skydrive and backup your files into the cloud. i think google drive gives you like 5 or 10gb free.

Yeah I know, I've been putting money aside for a secondary HDD seeing as the current one I have is 2 years old, things come up though, you know? I don't have a problem holding out for now, it's just a huge annoyance.
