So I am anxious to see about the i7-4790k and doing a build on it. Only problem is I'm in school and will be for the next 3 1/2-4 years! I currently am rocking an i7-2600 turbo @ 4.3 ghz with 16gb of ddr3 @ 1600mhz and a 680 with a SSD. I really don't need to upgrade, there isn't anything I can't play that I really want to, and I love my first built PC and don't want to sell it.

Also any graphics solution above my 680 costs an arm and a leg... Should I just quit being a baby and build a new system, or should I cannibalize my old system for a new one? I could use my antec 1200 looks brand new and 1000w antec PSU, cd drive, 16 gbs of ram, Windows 7 OS, coolermaster 212+, and my 680 until the 880 or 980 come out. Really all I would need is a new MOBO, CPU, SSD, and HDD.

If I bought the CPU from Microcenter, I would save a ton!

i7-4790k~ 270.00
MOBO~ 200.00
SSD~ 130.00
Total: $600.00- Thats not too bad!

OR

Above=$600.00 +
Case+ PSU~ 150.00
OS~ I think 75.00- student discount lol
Optical Drive~ 25.00
Ram ~ 150.00
I saw an openbox 290 from ASUS with non-ref cooler for ~300.00
Total: $1,300.00

That is a lot of moolah!

Or i can put in a larger SSD into my current rig and call it a day!

Whats your opinion? I have had upgradeitis for a while now lol!

I might just wait for DDR4 and 6 core i7s to become the norm.

Solution

Lol it is the most budget friendly and sensible thing to do! I just hope that 4790k hits 5ghz on air most people!

i dont see the point in building a new system considering the one you are currently using

i would wait until something demands a new system. a sudden leap in architecture requirements. like games wanting 6 core cpus (intel) or ddr4 or directx 12 etc etc.

your system is great and does everything you want it to. you just have money burning a hole in your pocket =P

best bet is to get a i5-4690K oc to 5ghz, and wait for the next gpu launch, 880 or something. the ssd is really cheap now with the Crucial MX100 SSD 512GB launch and go pure ssd storage. so wait untill then and get a really noticeable boost in fps.
