Hi all,

A few months ago my sister's laptop started having some issues and when my Dad tried to help her he imaged to drive to another mac in order to back up the files. So now on this mac we have, on the same drive, 2 partitions. One is the original for that computer which works fine, no problems there. The second is the image of the laptop. I can browse the directories of this partition and all the files appear to be there. But when trying to open them, every file produces a 'cannot open this file' in its respective application. I suspect that the drive was encrypted when it was imaged though I do not know for sure. If encryption is the issue it would have been something built into OSX, filevault i presume (not really a mac guy myself), and I do have the passwords, just no tool to extract the files. I have tried running disk utility first aid, which reported an 'invalid b-tree node size' that could not be repaired. The partition then refused to remount.

We don't need full drive recovery and its not really a goal either. But my sister would like to recover her photos and some schoolwork she had saved. Does anyone know of some software to try and tackle this with?

Some details:
Laptop was intel running 10.6? (will verify)
Mac with the drive is intel running 10.6.8
Format of all disks is Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)

Thanks

the files you cannot open are probably corrupted. It happens a lot on macs. If you think they are not corrupted, make sure those files have the proper extension in the name.

Like a Word document would be .doc

Often on mac, there is no extension and it can create a problem when moving them from one computer to another.

Work around is to open the file from the actual software it belongs to. Meaning, if you know the file that won't open is a Word document. I would suggest you open Word and go to file > open and find your problematic file.

Also check permissions on the file. That might be an issue too
