R9 290X low fps in BF4. Is it a Bottleneck?

Just bought a sapphire R9 290x reference card and was super excited to use it, but i get very very low frames on all my games. For example, I hear about people with 290x's getting over 60 fpsaverage on BF4 Ultra Settings. I get a steady 20-35 fps. Pretty low right? When i looked at my GPU load and CPU load my GPU was at 25-30% and my CPU was at a constant 100%.

My cpu is an fx-4350.

The CPU is definitely holding you back then, so I guess you will need a new CPU to achieve better frame rates

upgrade to one of these two ideally http://pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd8320frhkbox or http://pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd8350frhkbox The Fx-8350 will be faster, but with a good cooler, you can often OC the FX-8320 to the same speeds, but regardless of which one you go with, have a good cooler for the CPU

with a good water cooler like that, you should be able to do an excellent job OC'ing either CPU

Just gonna throw it out there... I drop to 45fps in many maps on BF3 and BF4 with my 8350 and r9 290... doesn't handle ultra well
Mantle fixes it with BF4, but then again, I think mine is underperforming. I've tried everything though, can't fix it...

Oh yes, don't get the wrong idea OP, the cpu is great for about 95% of games. Only I have come across that play badly ( i mean under 60) are Arma, Battlefield, borderlands 2 (its not TOO bad), and many single threaded games (Garry's mod and modded Minecraft suffer low fps) an skyrim.

But if you play BF3 or BF4 a lot... think about switching to a 4670k or wait for the 4690k end of this month. MUCH faster in these games

. The CPU is a beast, but while the 4th gen is a beast, the 3rd gen is a monstrous beast. Its cheaper/lower temps/higher OC --> will easily make up for the 7% performance boost the 4rd gen gives you compared to 3th gen ^^.

Intel chips are more expensive but they do have better performance, and you would have to but a new mobo as well

You could buy an 8350 for $180-$200, yes, but personally, I wish I'd spent the extra and got a 4670k for $210-$240... Yes, you would need a new mobo, but they are often cheaper than AMD's, coming in at like $120 for a decent one. So, your choice, you can sell your current board for a little pocket change.

Word of advice, you can save $20-$40 on either CPU if you wait for Newegg to have a sale, they are both on sale like every other week, just keep an eye out.

It IS the game. If it was my PC, it would happen in every game I play... but its just BF3/BF4. Something (possibly new drivers or somwthing) in the game doesn't like, my 8350, as you are obviously playing fine with your i7 and 290.

Just switched to XFX DD 280x and still getting framerate drops specially when using sniper scope.. I would like to mention again that I am playing in HD (1366x768) my GPU is very much overkill for that.. (even my old one 270x)

Are the drops higher than they used to be? honestly it could be the game, did the 280x boost a majority of your fps though?

Cause I got 4790k and R9 290 Tri-X now, and I now get about 70-110 on all maps, with drops into 60's at times.... And I have my 4790k at 4.4ghz...

Did you Highly OC your 290 or something? you sure its not a 290X Tri-X? How is it so fast???

Yes everything maxed out, do NOT, I repeat DO NOT use Mantle, never. FPS only drops into the 60s if Im streaming BF4, but i dont play bf4 anymore (EA and bugs bugs bugs bugs crashes errors and so on)

Hmm... well even with my 4790k, my card still runs better with Mantle, driver 14.7 beta 60's with DX11, 70+ with Mantle

But really? 90-110 in all maps? or just easy to run maps like the deserts... casue I CANNOT get 90-110 in Hanan Resort, Paracel Strom, ETC....
You sure you got one 290... and you got that at at stock clocks?

Yes.. FPS boosted to around 100-130 @ ultra but still having FPS drops specially when zooming in 40x ballistic and specially in zavod map and haiyan resort.. getting like 35-or 39 fps.. bare in mind my monitor is just HD and im using a beast of a rig.. so I think its the game..

That CPU is horrible though, regardless of the game.
