Hi all,

I'm having problems with Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite C875D (my dad's laptop). This is a fairly new PC, but a few days ago he received the following error message when turning the computer on: 'Boot configuration file does not contain valid information for operating system. Error code 0xc0000098'. Then it instructs you to use a recovery disk. He hasn't made any recent software or hardware changes to the computer.

So I made a recovery iso file on a usb stick, changed the BIOS priorities so that it checked for USB first, then restarted. This was unsuccessful - it said something like 'Reading USB...Fail Reading USB....Fail'. I found somewhere online suggesting that I needed to change the boot mode from UEFI to CSM Boot. I don't really know what this means, but I did it and it successfully booted from the USB.

Now I got to the Windows installation page, and there are two choices: install or repair. When I follow the repair button, there are various options to reset, repair, or restore the computer. When I try resetting, it says it is unable to do so - 'A required drive partition is missing'. When I try refreshing: 'The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again'. When I try a system image recovery, it says that it cannot find a system image on the hard drive.

If I go back and select the installation option, it asks for the Windows key and then asks which of 5 partitions I want to install Windows on. However, when I try to choose one of the partitions, it says 'Windows can't be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style'. There is an option that says 'Format' but I'm afraid to do that without knowing what I'm doing.

So does anyone have any advice? I'm kind of at my wits end and out of new options to try. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

From what you've said it looks as though it has suffered a Hard Drive failure. Probable best next step would be to check out the drive using Seatools from a bootable USB seeing as you have the means...

And if the drive has failed, you'll probably find this useful...

(Also the Recovery drive you created, did you use the Recovery Partition from your own PC? It won't apply to your Dad's Laptop, thought the bootable Recovery part can be used to access Troubleshooting)
