Gigabyte r9 280 (non-x) fps goes down when OC

Long time reader first time poster. I picked up a Gigabyte R9 280, not the 280x. Getting fantastic results. I decided (of course) to try to overclock it a bit. Every thing I do results in a massive drop in fps when overclocked. Stock I'm getting 62fps in Metro Last Light bench (high settings, not very high). If I overclock the core and memory, it is stable but I go down to 52fps every time. I tried using MSI Afterburner and the Gigabyte OC tool. Same results. Any ideas? Voltage seems to be locked on the card.

It's the memory, but also turbo.

GPU memory can often be clocked too far and you might not know because it doesn't crash or artifact. Instead it causes a lot of errors and decreases performance. Best to tune VRAM while running a 3D app in windowed mode, something like Unigine. This way you can see what the threshold is before performance actually decreases.

The next part is the stupid turbo core and how it relates to power and heat. Overclocking causes power and heat to go up, which can make the GPU not go into turbo mode. You will need to turn up the power limiter and then do a tuning while running a 3D app to see where the sweet spot is.

Thanks. I will give Unigine a shot and tweak it while running in windowed mode. I've overclocked a ton of video cards before and I've never seen it drop by near 20% by overclocking just a bit. I wonder if it is kicking down out of turbo mode if you change the clock speed at all.

So I've been playing with unigine in windows mode and it appears to be the fault of the GPU boost that Gigabyte employs. When I leave the card stock, it will boost the core up from 950 to 1072. If I set the card to, say 1100, it will run at 1100 for a minute during the bench and then downclock to 970 and stay there.

I don't know if you still want the bios but it can be found here http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4991&dl=1&RWD=0#bios
