I recently bought an Nvidia GeForce GTX 770, but when I try to boot the PC, I get to the blue HP screen with the option to "press esc for startup menu", but no further. After a short while, there's a beep, followed by another beep every 30 seconds until the 4th beep which is quickly followed by three short and fast beeps before the monitor loses signal from the PC. If I press esc, I get to the black screen that shows the PC specs, but I can't press esc again to get to the startup menu, and eventually the beeping starts and the same as above happens.

What could be the problem here?

Could be the power supply isn't up to driving that GPU. It is also possible that an HP, being a branded machine with BIOS limitations, simply does not support such a card. Unfortunately having a PCIe x16 slot is not a gurantee a card will work in an HP. Can you post your model number?

There are a lot of threads about HPs not being able to upgrade to certain GPUs. There was one here just three days ago but I can't find it. But read this http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio-Video-Monitors/Installing-a-GTX-770-graphics-card-in-a-HP-Pavilion-p7-1047c/td-p/3227997/page/2

Quite possibly but you might try a BIOS update and a little more research and I suppose it is possible some other high end GPU might work but I really can't say for certain - I do know that upgrading branded machines like HP is often an exercise in futility sadly.
