I have just finished building my pc based around a i5 4670k with a z87 mobo, I have a 27" monitor running on 1080p, my next purchase is a GPU, is it worth going for a R9 280x on this resolution or would a R9 270x do ok? I play a lot of games, need something silent with good graphics, what do you think please?

This discussion has been had before, the extra VRAM will only be used in "future games" and by then the GPU won't be powerful enough to have VRAM intensive settings enabled. Watch Dogs maxes out the 2GB VRAM but it is badly optimised, and 4GB makes no difference.

I play a lot of FPS, games like tomb raider and car racing games. My budget is around £250/$400. I am a bit of a silence freak though, my mate had a sapphire Toxic, I'd smash one of those with a hammer, sounds like a vacuum cleaner, any tips on a quiet GPU??

Which Sapphire Toxic? The new 280X Toxic with the Tri-X cooler is almost silent.
You could get an R9 280 Strix from Asus, though you'll pay a premium for the 0db fan mode.
