Hey guys I want to ditch Comcast's modem or bridge it. However, our phone currently runs through their gateway and I'm not certain if bridging the gateway will disrupt the phone service. My current configuration is CM -> Trendnet -> LAN the CM is currently just acting as a bridge to the internet with everything disabled and DMZ pointing to the Trendnet. I'd like to remove the DMZ and bridge it or completely remove it and replace it with a new modem without losing phone service. Thanks for any help guys.

More and more people are just giving up on physical phone lines and going with cell. The cell vendors are making it almost impossible to not buy a plan with unlimited minutes. If the cost is a problem or you wanted physical phones you could go with skype, vontage or even magic jack.

Does your phone connect into a phone jack on the Comcast modem? If so, you can only replace it with a similar modem.

If the phone doesn't connect to the Comcast modem via phone jack, or if it connects to a VoIP device first (i.e. Comcast ==> VoIP device via Ethernet ==> phone via phone cable), then you can replace the Comcast modem.

In either case, if the Comcast signal comes in over coaxial cable, you'll need a cable modem that takes coaxial input.
