I have a Sager custom laptop. It has i7 and GeForce Gt 650m 1GB. Now, it has a vga and an hdmi port on the side. My question is, if I hoop up an external monitor via the vga input/output, will that be done or use the integrated gfx from the cpu or the 650m (I only turn on the 650m when I play games) ? I apologize if the question is "noob" like :)

The gpu should work, though the pc is custom, so it's not 100% certain. ;)

So it sounds like it's a trial and error? It has to be another way, but lets say there isn't. How do I determine which source is providing the signal to the monitor?

So you have to turn on the 650m, or it will use the integrated graphics? I have no idea, but I would hope that the VGA output would display whichever one you have enabled.

Sort of. It is feature Nvidia Optimus. basically, you can set it so the 650m turns on and starts working instead of the integrated one automatically (per its decision), set it so when specific applications open the card starts up, or you can set it on all the time.

There's really nothing but just trying it and see how it goes, if you'll have to buy the cable or something like that to test it, then you could always ask the people who made the pc whether or not it will take advantage of the discrete gpu when using external displays.

As said before im pretty sure it is going to work, though im not fully confident when it's custom built.

EDIT: they have both an email and a phone number to contact technical support on if you would like to ask the ones who actually built it :)
