I would like some opinions on the phenom x4 965 and its single core performance as well for games like minecraft but also performance in some multi threaded games.

Solution
If you have not bought it yet get the FX6300 over the Phenom by a mile. The i3 suggestion is good but in highly threaded games the FX 6300 would be better and you can overclock it. I am still using my old Phenom II x4 @ 3.6GHz (unlocked Phenom II x2 550Be) for gaming and it still does a solid job (with my Radeon 6950 2Gb) and nothing so far has enticed me to upgrade but I expect the time will come as its nearly 5 years old and only cost £70 then.

For minecraft, I would go with an i3 4150, H97 pro4, and a GTX 750ti, for a solid budget rig.

Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($89.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: PNY GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Enthusiast Edition Video Card ($145.00 @ Amazon)
Total: $353.46

I would say the i3 will still do fine in so called multithreaded titles as well, which are few and far between. Watch Dogs was touted as being multicore and an i3 4130 was a whopping 3fps slower than an FX 8350.

It depends on how much you can overclock it. At stock speed 965 x4 is past its prime. At a good overclock, its not a bad budget cpu.

I"m using one right now @4.2ghz. BF4 plays perfectly well with less than 10-14 players. If I get on a map with more people I seem to fall "behind". I suspect it is more due to my DDR2 than anything else.
