Reliability of Third-Party Sata 3 Ports on Asus X79 Motherboards?

Hello all,

I'm wondering about the reliability of third-party Sata III (6 Gbps) ports on X79 motherboards, specifically the Asus X79 DELUXE, which uses a Marvell® PCIe 9230 controller to add 4 additional ports, and an ASMedia® ASM1061 controller for 2 additional ports, alongside Intel's 2 ports. (I don't know what kind of controllers the Asus X79 Rampage IV Black Edition uses.)

If one wanted to, is it possible to max out all these ports in non-RAID configurations (just 8 independent drives), and have all of them work as fast and efficiently as the Intel Sata III 6 Gbps ports? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm considering a new PC build. I know the upcoming X99 boards have support for a lot more Sata 3 ports natively, but they're not here until September, I believe.

Thanks very much for your time and advice!

P.S. My PC would be used for CG animation and 4K video editing (compressed 4k, probably Panasonic GH4 footage). So if you think a z87 or z97 board would suffice, please let me know! Thanks :)

On your mobo, I'd use the SATA III Intel ports (2) for OS and primary drive, then the 4 Marvel SATA III ports and then the 2 ASMedia SATA III ports (i.e. optical drives), if you have a RAID of any sort, place them on the Intel SATA II ports

Thanks very much for your response! So you haven't heard anything bad about the reliability of the Marvell or ASmedia ports? I've heard that third-party Sata 3 ports on Gigabyte boards can run slower than Intel Sata 2, so that's why I wouldn't want to buy into a solution that would bite me in the end, especially if I want to use more than 2 Sata III drives.

Thanks again.

With Marvell and ASMedia both, it comes down to how well they are integrated into the entire package, I've run into problems with them both on various mobos, but they generally are taken care of by a BIOS or driver update, with the X79 deluxe I haven't seen or heard of any problems, on the X79 BLack, it's split between simply Intel (2 SATA III and 4 SATA II) then ASmedia handles 4 SATA III and 2 eSATA III ports)
