now since the only way to expand memory on xbox one is usb 3 would a external usb 3 drive be faster than the 5400rpm drive inside i just dont want a decrease in speed.

and how do external usb 3 ssd's work would they be optimal

USB 3 is nearly as fast as SATA, it won't be a bottleneck, get an external 7200 and it'll be faster than the 5400, how it works, no-idea.

u can use any speed drive but internal drive controller/usb chip chip will likely give same average speed i would recommend a green or red drive possibly a seagate momentous xt hybrid drive former for endurance and power usage latter for better speed
