Upgrade AMD Mobo or switch to intel?

Hello,

I have been trying to figure out if I should switch to intel or not, right now I have a AMD 6350 with a Gigabyte 970A-D3P and I just cannot do any overclocking with it, it becomes unstable after going past 4.2 Ghz, which is sad since it apparently hits that when boosting. Anyway, I have been considering getting the Asus Sabertooth 990 FX so I can do some overclocking but now i am not sure if i should just switch to an Intel setup or not. If I were to get an intel setup I would probably go with something like an i5-4670k with a Asus Z97-PRO (not sure about this, I don't know what is best when it comes to intel yet.)

I am using my computer for some pretty tasking games and I would like to be able to stream them without having to downgrade the graphics that much. So if one is worse than the other as far as being able to stream I would like to get the one with the best performance.

Thank you for any help :)

You might get a much better OC with the Sabertooth, but you might not; overclocking is not a sure thing. OTOH, switching to Intel will give you much improved performance over your current setup.
In your budgeting, be aware that replacing your motherboard will typically also require a new Windows license, unless yours is a Retail version.

You really should not be encountering issues while streaming with a 6350. What is your current setup in terms of graphics? Also what program are you streaming with? I would advise OBS as it works like a dream while shaving off minimal frames.

Really? I have always been lead to believe that if I got a good enough mobo I would be able to hit at least fair OC levels. If that isn't the case I'll just save up for a intel setup and go from there. I do wish I could just stick with amd (get a 8350 or something) but I would need a new motherboard for that anyways so I might as well just switch to Intel.

A new windows license isn't something I even thought about ( I have an OEM copy), it's surprising that I can't just reuse the old key from the previous install, thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to factor that in to the costs.

Thanks for the help!

I have a AMD Radeon 7950 for my GPU and I am currently using OBS but my frames tank when I am playing almost anything while streaming. I am however, able to get a good stream when using X-split Broadcaster (gamecaster was worse than OBS for me.). Of course that means having my frames limited to 25 or paying for an X-split license.

Maybe I just didn't set up OBS right. I'll take another look and see if I can figure it out.

The Sabertooth is definitely a better-overclocking board, but how much a given chip will go will always be variable. Considering that the FX-6350 is basically just a factory-overclocked FX-6300, I don't know how much farther it would go.

I have heard of some pretty decent overclocks with the 6300 so I figured I should be able to get about the same with the 6350. I have seen some people push 4.5 to 4.7 Ghz, I would be happy with anything from 4.4 to 4.5 ghz but I don't know what I want to do at this point, I am still very much in the planning phase of this upgrade.

Thanks again for the help :)

X-Split runs better than OBS. Being that OBS is free, there's little room to complain. That being said, I'm going to have to second what Onus said, and save up for an Intel. I can stream at 1080p and 1440p on Ultra without much of a hit to my FPS. Using an i5-4670k.

Oooh how I would love to go that high on quality. I can only achieve 720p when playing something that doesn't task my system at all.

I have to ask, are you overclocked at all?

I can stream at 1080p/1440p with my 8320 @ stock with a M5A97 R2.0 along with my gtx 770 :/ In my case it is only utilizing something like 4-6 cores max while gaming and streaming so I am very confused. I remember when I was younger and had a shitty rig (not that yours is) that I would go into task manager and manually assign cores to my tasks. Have you tried that?

Along with that (sorry for all the questions), what CPU cooler do you have? Are you using an after market solution? Are you just raising the clock multiplier without adding voltage, etc?

I'm at 4.2 GHz, but only because that's the only stable point I've found. Wish I would've gotten a golden chip, but I'm completely fine with the performance of my system.

4.2 GHz is really good in my books, especially coming from 3.4 GHz, but yeah, I think anyone who is going to delve into Overclocking wants a golden chip.

I haven't tried assigning the cores manually, that is a really good idea, I'll try that the next time I stream.

When I last tried overclocking I had a Cooler Master Gemin II installed, now I have a Swiftech H220 because I thought I might be upgrading everything soon and I heard Intel processors heat up quite a bit so I invested in a water cooler. But I have not tried overclocking with this cooler installed.

From what I remember (the last time I tried overclocking was about a year ago) I messed around with the voltage (set it to 1.4v I think) and did something else but I don't remember what. I'll go into my bios and see if I can remember what I did just by looking at it.

I know I followed a guide I found somewhere and I thought I bookmarked it but I can't seem to find it. Anyway I'll go look into my bios.

edit: Ah! I found the guide I used to do the overclock.
so i set the DRAM at 1600MHz @ 1.5v
Set the Northbridge Frequency to 2200MHz
Set the HT Link speed to 2600 MHz
Set the NB voltage to 1.3v or 1.4v (I don't remember which.)
and then disabled anything that happened automatically (things like cool n' quiet)

Gah! this is like the billionth time I have hit the Solution button by accident! I wanted to keep this open a while longer.... well oops. lol.

Anyway I have thought about it a little and I think I am just going to save up for an intel setup.

thank you for the help everyone :)
