Hi

I have Nforce 790i Ultra, Core 2 Extreme QX9650 and I just upgraded the GPU to Radeon R9 290 and Corsair DDR3 1600MHZ. The problem I am having is the computer keeps giving BSOD after a few mins.

What I need to know is is the memory compatible with the CPU and motherboard cos I just found out the FSB of processor is 1333 and motherboard 1600MHZ. What does this mean?

If there is a problem with this setup please help.

Win 7 64bit
Power supply 750Watt
Kingston SSD 240

1) Go back to your original setup and make sure it's still working. Then, try only the video card. If you're still working then upgrade your memory.

2) Motherboard BIOS: upgrade this if newer exists.

3) 1333MHz FSB - I could explain this, but it's not important.

4) run MEMTEST www.memtest.org (may need to change BIOS boot order so the DVD or USB as appropriate for Memtest is first otherwise it boots Windows).

*I suspect a timing issue or defective DDR3 memory but do the above and we'll see where we stand.

That's a very old motherboard based on a very troubled chipset. There's a reason why NVidia is no longer in the motheboard business, they weren't very good at it.

It is quite possibly a memory compatibility issue. Chipsets and CPUs didn't start to natively support DDR3-1600 until many years after the NForce 790 chipset was released. A good litmus test would be to run the memory at a slower speed such as DDR3-1066. I'm not sure what level of support your motherboard has for memory profile selection, so you may have to configure this manually.

As for the FSB... That chipset is rated for a 400Mhz FSB (FSB is quad-data-rate, so 1600 MT/s). This ensures compatibility with the QX9770. All other LGA 775 CPUs use a 333Mhz (1333 MT/s) FSB or below. It will automatically select the appropriate one on powerup, unless it's configured to do so otherwise. I ran my own QX9650 at 400Mhz with a 10x multiplier to yield 4Ghz on an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo (Intel P45 chispet) for many years.

Your mobo chipset was designed to run up to 8GB, but in a 4x2GB config, not a single 8GB stick....could try raising the the DRAM voltage maybe + 0.06) and raise the MC (memory controller) voltage, but guessing will still have problems as not designed to run 8GB sticks

Thanks tradesman1, I guess im gonna have to get new ram instead of new mobo n proc. The reason I don't wanna upgrade is I want a cheap 6 core or 8 core intel cpu.

A question I wanna ask is what do u thing about core i7 4930, should I buy one now or wait till september?

If no rush, I'd wait and see what comes of the Haswell-E CPUs and X99, they showed some rather impressive mobos at Computex, if more of a hurry would look at the 4930, great CPU and maybe pair it up with the newer X79 Deluxe
