PCI-E Slot affecting FPS?

Hey guys, I'm trying to determine what could be the cause of my FPS to be lower than expected. I discovered that some people claim they are getting higher FPS using a different PCI-E slot for their graphics card, and was wondering if could potentially be why I'm suffering from lesser performance? I'm currently at work or I'd try this out right now.

If you look at this image, there are three slots for potential graphics cards.

To the left of each slot, are the words PCIEX4, PCIEX8, or PCIEX16, what are the differences between these slots? Will I suffer from lower FPS putting it into my PCIEX8 slot? It's currently in the 16 slot.

Many thanks.

NZXT Gamma Mid-Case
EVGA GTX 780ti
i5 2550k 3.4GHz (4.8GHz Turbo Boost)
8GB DDR3 RAM
Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-BW Motherboard (Micro-ATX)
EVGA Super NOVA 850W PC Power Supply - Gold
Noctua D2H-B14 Heatsink
1920 x 1080
Windows 8.1

Seeing YouTube videos where people are getting double my frame-rate using the same specs. Can't figure out what's wrong.

So I should be getting the best FPS because I'm using that slot? I mean, I've had this motherboard for several years, as well as the CPU. Could I have worn the slot out or something?

claims are one thing reality is another.
everything being equal no two machines will give the same results..........
you don't know what the other machines game settings are.
people lie to make themselves feel good.
top pci-e slot is the slot you want to use first. in the "olden" days you needed to enable a slot for first.

list specs...... elaborate on circumstances....................
