A pair of HD7850s will need the bridge. Many Crossfire-capable cards come with the bridge (SLI bridges come with the motherboard, since SLI is a mobo-licensed technology). If you don't have one, I can't imagine any halfway-decent PC shop not having a spare they'll either give you (especially if you buy something else from them) or sell cheap.

2 x HD7850s will blow past single cards like the GTX770 or R9 280X in most games ... though if they are 1GB cards there may be issues in some titles loading fancy textures.

Bridges can be found (some at ridiculous prices) around the Internet if you can't find one locally. I'd contact your OEM and politely 'demand' one .... especially if your cards are from the same manufacturer.

If the OP has one HD7850, buying a second one may be cheaper than a single card upgrade, although it is certainly true that not all games benefit from Crossfire (e.g. Watchdogs, for which Crossfire and SLI may not be working yet). Another option would be to sell the single HD7850 and then buy a stronger card, but that may or may not be a viable choice depending on how long his PC may be down waiting for the new card.

The GTX770 is an over-volted (+50w) and over-clocked GTX680 and will run 80C. 2xHD7850s in CrossFire will pull 30w more, but run 20C cooler, and put $200 in your pocket.
