Suggestions for moving all of my gear from a closet to another room?

I have a closet that currently stores all of my equipment and it is a mess. There is a junction box inside the closet and tons of cables are coming out from it, and the cables are connected to a switch, there is also an Extreme N that I would like to move to a different room along with the modem that is also connected to the switch.

The problem is that all of these cables that are coming out of the junction box and that are connected to the switch somehow provide internet to the different ethernet ports in the different rooms in my house. If I unplug these cables from the switch the rooms no longer have internet provided through the ethernet ports in those rooms.

1. Does anyone know what these types of cables are called that provide internet for each room?
2. Am I stuck with keeping all of my gear in this closet because it needs to connect to the switch which is powered by the modem for internet?

Thanks for any info.

If all of the ports from rooms in your house feed into that junction box, then you will indeed need to leave a switch in there. You could move the modem into another room, and connect it to a port there, which feeds back into the junction box, but unless you've got a second port in that room, you'll have no internet there.
The cables are most likely Cat-5 or Cat-5e ethernet cables. I'd have to see pictures and/or a diagram to see how the wiring has been run, but most image-sharing sites are blocked at work. You could send a PM to the moderator "mousemonkey;" he's a network wiring pro (you should see the pics of some of his work). Tell him "the Onus is on you to help me."

It's hard to work out what is going on in that cupboard, and that's even with pictures! :ouch:

The white cables are coax cables and could be extended as could the Cat 5 cables that are in the spiral wrap using a mixture of methods (F-Type barrels and RJ45 joiners or punch down couplers) then just move all of that lot to a different cupboard in a different room of the house.

If I understand correctly, I could use joiners or one of the other things you suggested, I could then extend the length of the coax and Cat 5 cables.

1. What are you suggesting I do with the cables next? Punch holes through the drywall to feed them to another room?
2. Does speed slow down with each additional adapter connecting two cables together?
3. To keep things as simple as possible, if I just move the modem, and router into another room, and leave the ethernet cables coming out of the junction box that are connecting to my switch (I believe these cables provide internet to the ethernet ports in my other rooms). Should the internet in the other rooms still work even with the modem no longer in that location?

Here is a diagram I created describing as best as I can the cables/hardware currently in the closet. I'm hoping this helps describe things a bit more.
