Hello. After having problems with getting my Powercolor HD 7850 recognized by an old OEM motherboard (original thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2162194/powercolor-7850-post-video-signal-bios-beep.html) I got a different one (ASUS M4A78) and breadboarded it.

Unfortunately I dont get it to POST (i think). Im getting a rather odd error code - 1 short beep, a pause and then 2 more short beeps and no signal to my DVI monitor - 15sec video of the rig:

http://kblsalat.de/mainboard.mp4

- It throws correct error beeps for no RAM, no GPU (and no Keyboard)
- It works neither with my verifiedly working HD7850 nor with a low-end card currently running in my old PC
- Tried CMOS reset, no success
- CPU is working (the heatsink is getting warm, but I have no other AM2 socket mobo for verification)

Does somebody own this board or know this error code? I'm at wit's end. I got it off eBay so I suspect it might be a corrupt board. But wouldn't it be completely dead then? If it recognizes PCIe, CPU and RAM it should POST, right?

Greetings :)

During the procedure of swapping PSUs it suddenly started working. I guess I made a stupid mistake somewhere. The HD7850 still doesn't work on it, BIOS is up-to-date.

Whats that issue with graphics cards not working in older mainboards? I thought PCIe is supposed to be backwards compatible. Any pro insights on that? :)

So: Will my HD 7850 run on

- ASRock G31M-GS (http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/g31m-gs)
- BIOSTAR G41D3C (http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=518)

? I want to make sure I don't buy crap this time. pcpartpicker.com lists them as being compatible: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/?compatible_with=powercolor-video-card-ax78501gbd5dh

I'd like to get either of those for their IDE slot (I know there are adaptors) and the fact that they're LGA775, I can't afford buying tons of stuff at the moment. Or should I rather go for a lower-end graphics card since my CPU (either 2x2.4GHz or 2x3.0GHz, I'm going to OC though) might bottleneck it? If I were to do that, which GPU would play nice with the Asus M4A78?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
