How do you get inside the enclosure? I have an External Maxtor back up device and it is not being recognized by my computer. It worked a few weeks ago and then I heard a whistle noise and it won't show material backed up.
Someone said to get inside the enclosure, but how do you do that? And how do you find the part that will show my data?

Scrwdriver?

If the case is sealed, then there's probably no parts inside that can you an repair.

Is the cable separate from the enclosure? You can try a different cable, if you haven't already.

I had an external hd that went out a while back and I pried open the case, hoping to find a standard HD that I could dis-connect and then re-connect directly to my PC. No joy. The disk and controller were soldered as a single part.

If the data is precious to you, you might try a disk recovery service. If it is only backups and you have the original data still intact, then just be thankful it was your backup solution that failed (and not your primary) and buy a new disk.

Good luck!
