Getting new Intel motherboard, need CPU recommendation, or stick with AMD?

I've been an AMD user for a good while now, but recently I was given a chance to test out a pretty decent motherboard from ASRock (Fatal1ty H97 Killer) that support Intel processors.

Here's the new motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty%20H97%20Killer/

My current computer consists of a Phenom II X3 (unlocked to X4 and OCd to 3.2GHz) and a ASRock 970 Extreme3 (R1.0).

As of right now, I have around $140-$150 (maybe a bit more). I plan on buying a decent Intel CPU within that price range, but I'm not entirely sure how efficient the choices I have are. From what I'm observing, my choices are mostly dual-core (Haswell) Pentiums, and a few low-end i3's (which are also dual core), and are also locked.

AMD on the other hand, I have my eye on the FX-8320. 8 cores, 3.5GHz base clock, and fully unlocked. I haven't done any CPU comparisons yet, but that sounds like it would destroy any of Intel's offerings in that price range.

My main concerns with going Intel primarily are:

- Can only get true dual-core chip offering (I also heard Hyperthreading isn't worthwhile either for the most part)
- Can't overclock if I needed/wanted to

So, here's a few scenarios I have planned (after buying a low-end i3 and trying the motherboard):

- If highly impressed; sell old motherboard/CPU, return i3, buy better CPU
- If unimpressed, return i3, sell old CPU, buy FX-8350 (or something)
- If unimpressed, return i3, sell old motherboard and CPU, go with an APU Kaveri build

I'd rather use Newegg to buy the parts (so recommendations based on price should probably come from there), but any store that accepts returns without hassle would be fine I suppose.

Does anyone have any suggestions? If I had to choose a Intel CPU currently, it might be a i3-4360, but I'll have a better idea once the money situation settles a bit more.

Forget the APU idea, APUs aren't worth crap for real gaming.

Buying an AMD FX chip at this point is a bad idea, as the AM3+ socket is essentially dead. The CPU technology is about 4 years behind Intel, and having 8 cores instead of 4, or even 2, can't make up for it.

Your best option would be to get an Intel i5 CPU. Sell your current stuff, save a little maybe, and then buy an i5-4690 or something. Pair it with an H97 motherboard, and you got a pair that will blow away anything from AMD.

Intel i3's are also another option, and will be good for the most part, but I would recommend a 4-core offering at this point in gaming.

Hope that helps!

Like Zircoben said, ditch the APU idea all together. An i3 setup can do better, they can perform pretty well in gaming set ups depending on you GPU.
If you can't afford a i5 4690 go for a 4590 as it performs almost as well as the 4690 for a few bucks less and the only difference is .5ghz clock speed.
